I consider myself blessed to be born and raised as a USAF brat by my wonderful Southern Gentleman Papa and my loving, giving German Mama. I lived in Florida, California, Alabama and Mississippi before I started school in Germany in 1961, then Washington, D.C., Mississippi, and Spain before Papa retired in Panama City Beach, Florida. In 1960 (I was 5), Papa was assigned to a remote tour on the DEW line, so Mama and my sister and I went to live with my German grandparents. I started 1st grade in a German school in April 1961, and stayed there until American school started at Frankfurt/Rhein Mein AFB in September. I loved to read, and always wanted to write. I won a couple of "Sparky the Fire Dog" essay contests (to promote Fire Prevention month) in the 5th and 6th grades. On November 22, 1968, my poem about the JFK assassination was published in the local newspaper!Papa taught me to love photography, and let me work all by myself in his b&w darkroom in the back bathroom after he was convinced I had learned enough to do so. Mama taught me to sew, embroider, bake, cook and knit. They both taught me not to pay someone to do something you can do yourself!After college, I spent 4 months in Europe -- first finishing up a Directed Study in Strasbourg, France, then backpacking across the continent, visiting places I remembered from my childhood and new ones I will never forget.I got a good job with the DoD and moved to Maryland, where I adopted 2 sons and raised them on my own. I kept us busy with sports and scouts. When they were too old to hang out with me, I combined my love of photography and writing into a new hobby -- scrapbooking -- then added in my interest in genealogy and digitally created some family history books. I retired after 32 years, and now divide my time between the family homestead in Panama City Beach and the Maryland home where I raised my family.
