I believe the solution to Africa's empowerment challenges is trade, not aid. But, for trade to bring about genuine empowerment, it must be above-board, compliant, and sustainable. For this reason, I head a trade compliance consulting firm, BlueBlox, that I established to enable and streamline cross-border trade into Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.In this role, I help multinational manufacturers to overcome the barriers they face in importing products into developing markets. This is how I try to help to empower nations: One project at a time. One business at a time. One country at a time. Although based in Switzerland at present, I grew up in the lovely land of South Africa, where pervasive injustice, unfairness and corruption motivated me to travel down the road of philanthropy - on a quest to enable and support the continent. Along that path, I soon realised, lies hopelessness. Aid is a problem in Africa, not a solution. And, in many instances, African trade is exploitative and unhealthy. What's needed is connection and courage. An Africa where the wisdom of the old meets the innovation of the new. An Africa known for producing pioneers in industry, invention and thought leadership. My mission is seeing BlueBlox being part of the solution, raising standards, creating hope and inspiring dreams.
