About Dr. Dorothy Onyango

Dr. Dorothy Onyango started her career as a health care provider in the public sector in Kenya in 1998. Inspired by the need for skilled management in a health sector challenged by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, she pursued a career in public health leadership and management. She managed a multi-million dollar country program in Kenya funded by The Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and END Fund, first for Innovations for Poverty Action and then transitioned the project into Evidence Action, a sister organization that scales up evidence based interventions. Dorothy previously worked in Nigeria for Malaria Consortium in a project funded by DFiD, World Bank and USAID; and programmes in South Sudan funded by CIDA, Global Fund, CHF, USAID, and BSF; a health program in Liberia for the International Rescue Committee funded by JSI/USAID, BPRM, UNICEF, ECHO and a private for-profit organization. She is experienced in international multi-site project coordination in the USA; and health systems development, management and strengthening in post conflict and developing countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. She has been a management trainer and mentor for health workers and managers, coordinator for a health program that supported primary and secondary health care facilities, and community-based interventions, Area Coordinator, Coordinator for two highly successful international flagship government programs, Country Director and currently as an independent consultant covering Anglophone countries in Sub-Saharan Africa as well as Sudan. For example, she worked in Liberia during the Ebola crisis successfully implementing the first national insecticide treated nets (ITN) mass distribution campaign in the country. Over the last decade she has gained a global reputation for her particular expertise in mass distributions and mass drug administrations, most recently evaluating an integrated seasonal chemoprophylaxis (SMC) and ITNs mass distribution in Kwara State, Nigeria - a first of its kind and currently adopted as Global Funds modus operandi in Nigeria for the two programs.She is currently also a student of the French language at Alliance Française in her spare time and is at the B1 level.Specialties: Public Health: Management, Health Systems Strengthening, Malaria, NTDs
