Migrant Worker Outreach (MWO) also known as Haitian Migrant Worker Outreach, is an organization of volunteers, with the mission of welcoming migrant workers to South Jersey. Six thousand Hispanic and Haitian migrant workers come to New Jersey every summer to work in the blueberry harvest. About 30% of the Haitian migrant workers who travel to NJ are women. School aged children who accompany their families attend a migrant education program while their parents work in the fields. Youth ages fourteen and older can legally work in the fields and do. Field work goes on seven days a week from sun up till sun down. MWO coordinates several projects: * Publication & distribution of FREE Migrant Worker Journals, which are available in English, Haitian Creole, and Spanish. * English as a Second Language classes, offered at one or more camps in the evenings, co-sponsored by MWO and Hammonton Rotary; * Distribution of donated clothing, books, folding chairs and other items MWO helps coordinate activities for migrant workers and their families which are co-sponsored by local individuals and organizations. We are Community Partners with Stockton University. We also collaborate with student volunteers at area high schools and at other colleges and universities as those volunteers take a leadership role in organizing activities to benefit migrant workers. MWO partners with Cape May Library system, inviting Canadian tourists to donate French books for those of the Haitian Migrant Workers who speak French (about 10%), and especially French-English dictionaries for some of the students in our adult ESL classes. The library branches serve as drop off points for vacationing Canadians to deposit books. The library gets to keep some of the donated French books, and Migrant Workers can take some of the French books to Haiti with them.
