I am a third year Social Care student at the Institute of Technology Tralee.I have a passion for working with disadvantaged people and groups. I have a particular interest in the areas of Family Support, Addiction, Mental Health, Child Protection, Care Leavers, and disadvantaged youths.I have completed two work placements as part of the course. My first placement was in Springboard which is a family support service. Working there was a great experience for me as I learned a huge amount from my time there. I learnt valuable skills such as teamwork, one to one work, communication, confidentiality, advocacy, empathy and the importance of humour. My second placement was in Talbot Grove addiction treatment centre. I found this placement very challenging. There was a huge amount of learning in it for me from both a professional and personal point of view.I am a very driven and open-minded individual. I am always open to new learning and ways of improving my skills and knowledge base. I feel that I have a considerable amount of skills, knowledge and life experience that makes me a valuable asset to any team or group that I am involved in.

Support WorkerTalbot Grove Sep 2015 - Dec 2015CastleislandTalbot Grove is a residential addiction treatment centre that cares for addicted individuals and their families. My main role in the centre was building relationships with clients and acting as a source of support for them as they went through the rehabilitation process.I co-facilitated group therapy sessions and family groups. I admitted clients through the formal admittance procedure that the centre operates. I participated in staff briefing sessions, whereby the rest of the staff would be informed of what had taken place in group therapy and any concerns that needed to be raised in relation to individual clients. I gave input on the formulation of clients individual care plans.

Family Support WorkerSpringboard Project Feb 2015 - May 2015TraleeThe Springboard project is a joint partnership between the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service (KDYS) and TUSLA. The project works with vulnerable children and families in the community that have either self-referred or have been referred on by another agency. My role as a student on placement was primarily working with the young people on a one-to-one basis. The families Support Worker would identify areas they felt the young person needed further support with and we would come up with various methods on which to provide these supports. I also helped out with the incredible years programme, which is a programme for the young person and the parents. The project workers work with the parents and children separately. We did various pieces of work like parenting skills, budgeting, hygiene, healthy eating, sharing and making friends. Other supports that I provided were advocacy for the family on a variety of different issues, empowerment, assisting with filling out forms for entitlements and visiting the houses of the families to check in with them.
