About Dot Bekker
There are 3 things in life that I am passionate about and these are Women’s equality, Entrepreneurship and Africa, not always in that order. I have spent the last 15+ years working with Entrepreneurs to develop and grow their businesses as well as develop their online strategies. With some personal life changes also came the opportunity to reassess my own goals, where I wanted to be and what I wanted to do with the next 20 years of my life. The answer came surprisingly easily but the method was one that escaped me for a while … Women and Africa.I decided to return home to Zimbabwe after 20 years in Europe. First let me say that African women have always been a source of inspiration to me, many come from the most challenging childhoods, countries and backgrounds and yet to paraphrase Maya Angelou ‘and still they rise’. Many are strong beyond imagining. When researching Africa one cold fact became blatantly clear to me. Africa’s greatest resource is being left ‘on the table’. The one resource, in a resource rich continent, where everything is for sale, is being ignored and left to wither on the field. It is the one resource that can increase national GDP, reduce child mortality, increase life expectancy, improve organisational efficiency, contribute more to local communities, increase education of children in fact it can generally increase the socio-economic conditions of a country … and it educated girls/women! Women are 50% of the continent and yet they lag far behind in education, work equality and opportunity.
