About Doug Dougherty

At Cooper Equipment Rentals, we strive to create an environment where employees are happy at work and customers want to keep coming back. We make it clear to everyone at the company that our values—the “Cooper Difference”—are non-negotiable, and I’m gratified to see how much they resonate with our many long-term employees. My business partner, Darryl Cooper, and I, have complementary skills and perspectives—we each bring different ideas to the table, and it works incredibly well. Since we joined forces in 2010, we have grown the business from two locations to 65 and from twenty employees to 1,100. Our company has grown at a compound annual growth rate (“CAGR”) of 42% since 2010. As a leader, I know that teams accomplish more than individuals, and I always seek differing opinions before making any decision. I’ve learned that one of the best ways to get people engaged is to ask them what they think. I always leave my door open and make it clear that I’m open to talking any time. I rely heavily on my team to tell me the right thing to do—they are the experts, after all. This perspective is core to my deep belief in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I). To me it’s a natural extension of my long-held philosophy that you get more accomplished when you seek a wider range of thoughts, experiences and ideas. We are actively working toward achieving gender parity across the organization and making tremendous progress. It makes me very proud that Cooper was awarded a bronze parity certification under Women in Governance in 2022, and we continue to set our sights even higher for future years. A diverse team leads to more ideas and better solutions for our customers; why wouldn’t we want that?I also believe in giving back to my community. I’m a member of the board of trustees at the George Hull Centre for Children and Families, a charitable organization providing child and youth mental health services, whose mission is very important to me. I’m also an active member of the Georgian Peaks Ski Club, and an avid tennis player, golfer and cyclist. My wife and I have three grown sons, three wonderful daughters in law, and 4 grandchildren, all of whom make us very proud in so many different ways.

Doug Dougherty Work Experience Details
  • Cooper Equipment Rentals Ltd.
    Ceo
Cooper Equipment Rentals Ltd. Jun 2010 - Present
    Mississauga, Ontario, Ca
    • In 2010, inspired by the potential I saw in Cooper Equipment Rentals, I joined forces with my talented business partner Darryl Cooper and became 50% owner and president (I became CEO in 2018). • Expanding the business under the tagline Canada’s Leading Construction Equipment Rental Business, we have grown from two locations to 65 and from twenty employees to 1,100. Cooper has grown at a compound annual growth rate (“CAGR”) of 42% since 2010. • I am proud to say we have never wavered from our simple primary focus: to make Cooper Equipment Rentals a place where people are happy to come to work and feel empowered to make decisions that are right for their customers which in turn makes it a place where customers want to do business.• Today, we are the largest independently owned equipment rental company in Canada and the only one operating from coast to coast, as well as the seventeenth largest among all rental companies in North America, according to the 2022 RER 100 ranking.
  • Unified Growth Partners

    Unified Growth Partners 2006 - 2010
    Tampa, Florida, Us
    • My role at UGP was to help the company build Brightheart Veterinary Centres, a new network of specialty vet hospitals across Canada and the mid-western, north-eastern and eastern United States. • I was a member of a team that led the acquisition and integration of eight referral animal hospitals, helping to grow the business from the ground up and ultimately reaching $55 million in revenue.• The value proposition to potential hospitals was that they could continue to focus on their passion—practicing specialty veterinary medicine—while we assumed the business aspects of their organization.• This was an extremely valuable experience for me, giving me insight into an entirely new industry along with in-depth business development/M&A experience, while also giving me the perspective to see that the equipment rental industry is truly where my passion lies. When UGP was sold in 2010, it was time for me to get back to my roots.
  • United Rentals Inc.
    Vice President, Fleet Operations
    United Rentals Inc. 1998 - 2006
    Stamford, Ct, Us
    • I moved to United Rentals after the sale of our family business. United was a public company, much larger than the environment I knew, and this proved to be one of the formative experiences of my career. • At United Rentals, the leadership encouraged an innovative mindset, always allowing space for people to find better ways to work and new ways to grow. It was fast-paced and exciting, and everybody had an important role to play.• Quickly promoted to VP of Fleet Operations, I was able to bring my equipment rental expertise to leadership discussions about strategy, acquisitions, and operations—there was a lot to do, as the company had grown through 250 acquisitions in 30 months—which in turn taught me a great deal about implementing strong systems and processes, and about the business and the industry overall. • Looking to expand my skill set, I then spent some time learning different aspects of the business, as a district manager in the Midwest and then as realty services manager for Canada, where I managed 120–130 properties and developed strong negotiation and market analysis skills to support the strategic growth of the company in Canada.
  • Ray-Gordon Equipment Limited
    President
    Ray-Gordon Equipment Limited 1983 - 1998
    • I took over the leadership of this family business from my father in 1983, and embarked on a growth strategy that would see revenues grow from $2 million to $15 million.• Because this was early in my career, I relied heavily on help from others who were more knowledgeable than me—this has become my lifelong philosophy: I know that I accomplish much more in collaboration with others than I ever could on my own. • Given that the industry was consolidating, and although it was difficult to part with the family business, we decided to sell in 1996.• Ultimately the business was sold again, this time to United Rentals, in 1998, which led to one of the most enriching periods of my career.
