About Doug Fairlie
🔍 About Me:I am an experienced cell biologist and protein chemist, passionate about unraveling the intricacies of life and death within cells, their involvement in diseases, and how they can be targeted for therapeutic benefit.🔬 Research Focus:My laboratory is at the forefront of investigating the fundamental biological processes of programmed cell death (apoptosis) and autophagy. We explore their pivotal roles in cancer, intestinal homeostasis, and parasitic infection. Our research employs a diverse toolkit or techniques and resources, including cell biology and biochemical studies, drug discovery and evaluation, X-ray crystallography, and in vivo models.📚 Academic Contributions:Published ~110 peer-reviewed articles.Deposited more than 35 X-ray crystal structures to the Protein Data Bank (PDB).Held patents for specific ligands targeting Bcl-2 proteins, demonstrating innovation in drug development.🌟 Key Discoveries:• Spearheaded the development of highly specific ligands targeting Bcl-2 proteins, including Mcl-1, that were pivotal for the subsequent development of drugs targeting this protein family.• Pioneered the discovery and characterization of the first cell death pathway in a parasite.• Identified a critical new master regulator of gastrointestinal homeostasis.• Developed first-in-class compounds against parasitic Bcl-2 proteins, advancing this approach for anti-parasitic drug development.• Led innovations in non-natural peptides, including the elucidation of some of the first crystal structures of complexes with non-natural ligands and the development of a cell-penetrating alpha/beta-peptide with cancer cell activity.• Established critical in vivo models for dissecting cell death mechanisms.• Engineered a highly potent LIF superantagonist with promising therapeutic implications.• Identified a novel, redox-controlled mechanism governing CLIC ion channel function.• Significantly contribution to the field of cytokines, with insights into the IL-6 and TGF-beta families, and SOCS proteins.💻 Website Development:In addition to my research, I have an aptitude for website development. I've created several scientific websites for educational purposes and as research tools. If you're looking to build a science-based website or web application, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
