I am a Small Claims Court judge, act for mental health patients before the Consent and Capacity Board, represent the Family Responsibility Office in Family Court, and serve on a Law Society committee. I am also a Steering Committee member of the National Action Committee on Access to Justice. I am a regional representative on the Ontario Bar Association Council, and previously served as a director and Chair of the Pro Bono Committee. At the Canadian Bar Association I chaired the Legal Aid Committee and served on the Access to Justice Committee.From 2003-2020 I was Director of Community Legal Services at Western Law, a student legal clinic serving low income persons in the London community. I was also an adjunct professor, teaching Litigation Practice, Advanced Litigation Practice, and Access to Justice.In recent years I was a training advisor for the Law Practice Program at Toronto Metropolitan University (Ryerson) and taught at Fanshawe CollegeI was the inaugural president of the Association for Canadian Clinical Legal Education (2010-2013) and was a leader in the movement to reform legal education to integrate practical skills and ethics in the law school curriculum.Internationally I have visited law schools in the US, the UK, and India, and trained new clinics in the Middle East. I am passionate about training student legal clinics to improve access to justice internationally.Politically, I served as President of the Liberal Party of Canada in 2008-09 where major reforms were instituted, including a national membership program, Victory Fund, and a new database program (Liberalist). I also served as co-chair of the Change Commission, which made recommendations to change the culture of the Liberal Party. I was the federal Liberal candidate for the riding of London West for the 2011 election. We had a first rate campaign, with 350 volunteers and knocked on 22,000 doors.In November 2014 I received the ultimate gift - a liver from a deceased donor, for which I will be eternally grateful. I have devoted my time and energy to the cause of organ donation as a director of Trillium Gift of Life Network and member of the Bioethics Committee for Canadian Blood Services. I am currently co-chair of New Canvas of Life, a group that hosts an annual fundraising event for the Multi-Organ Transplant Program at University Hospital.
