About Doug Fox
One of the youngest Senior Staff UX Researchers at Google, I was quickly promoted 3 times in a 8.5 year period; going from Intern to UX Manager. Serving as a UX Manager on Google Workspace and Mobile Carrier Services like Google Fi and serving as a Senior Researcher early in my career on Google Fiber.Seeing an opportunity to increase the influence and evolve UX Research practices at Google, I created a one-of-kind role at Google to unify UXR Practices across 50+ products and 180k+ employees. I work directly with our highest UX governing body (UX Leadership Council) to inspire Googlers to follow cutting edge user-centered practices that help us more consistently realize opportunities to capture markets and work better together to design more cohesive experiences that cut across hundreds of Google products. In a short 3 year period, I have inspired almost all of Google to follow the Critical User Journey methodology, giving us our very first unified language and user metrics system for defining and measuring user needs and behaviors. With no top-level mandate, this role required me to be an effective story teller and inspiring leader to help all Googlers see the vision and be motivated to help us reach it. Often having to convince the highest level executives at Google that this was the path forward for UX at the company. In my past life at Google I was the UX Manager on Google Workspace Tools (Meet, Voice, and Jamboard). Managing a 10 person research team that used customer insights to help drive vision of how we build communication tools to more effectively collaborate in a remote work environment. I also managed the Google Fi and Android Messaging teams. Helping Google create a mobile carrier service that could disrupt traditional mobile carrier business models and create a messaging service that could rival iMessage, a distinct advantage of iPhones over Android phones. As a researcher, I have been revered as one of the top UXRs the company, which gave me the clout to pull off unifying research practices through Critical User Journeys. A 3x winner of the best research award at Google. I have earned this distinction with my unique blend of quant and qual techniques that provide big data with strong user stories that resonate with audiences. My favorite being the impact of gigabit Internet speeds on early Google Fiber markets, a longitudinal study that used survey and repeated house visits to study the evolution in how we designed Google Fiber services.
