I revamped legacy systems for improved reliability and consolidated business logic across multiple systems to ensure the accuracy of data displayed to members.
Senior Staff Engineer
As a staff engineer at Adwerx, my responsibilities are multifaceted. My current priorities are focused around identifying areas of the Adwerx monolith that need attention in one way or another, and improving them. This might be through identifying unused code and removing it, analyzing existing code and improving it, or modernizing development approaches. I also support developers on an as-needed basis with feedback, advice, technical help, analysis, reviews, and more. Basically, my job is to generally make things better in the application and for our team as a whole.I have contributed to many projects at Adwerx related to all areas of our applications. I've worked on partner integration, a next-generation system for automating ad creation for partners, advertising automation, rules engines, push notifications, and implemented in-funnel video editing. I've integrated with numerous third party APIs, added enhancements to our in-house rules engine, introduced developer quality-of-life tools, and much more.
Owner
I started Doug Hughes LLC after officially closing down Alagad. I transitioned over one client, D.A. Davidson Companies, a regional investment bank and worked with them exclusively for three years. I helped this client in many ways. Of note, I helped build their client access portal, securely integrated with third party financial systems, produced the REST API that backs their mobile application. I helped automate a wide range of tasks by writing plugins for Atlassian tools, creating Chef cookbooks and recipes to automate infrastructure, and testing and deploying applications.I also occasionally take on side projects. Some side projects have been done for Mailchimp, Squarespace, and Square.
Java Instructor
At The Iron Yard I guided people who were new to programming through an intense 12-week bootcamp-style coding class. I started as the Java instructor in Raleigh, NC, where I taught many topics including Git, Object Oriented Programming, debugging, unit testing, Maven, JDBC, SQL, JPA, Spring Boot, IOC/DI, and much more. Some of my early classes even touched on functional programming with Clojure. As the second Java instructor at The Iron Yard, I had a big role in writing and revising the Java curriculum. I also made significant contributions to the Front End Engineering curriculum. In early 2016 The Iron Yard extended classes to 16 weeks and unified their curriculum across the country. After this transition I taught Front End with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, backend with Node.JS, and supporting tools. I also taught four-week specialization tracks in React.JS, Java, and Ruby on Rails. In addition to my formal role as an instructor, I independently created custom tools to provide real time feedback on student exercises to facilitate identification and remediation of struggling students. Additionally, I created tools to automate tedious tasks, make the student experience smoother, and which enhanced in-house tools. The Iron Yard closed in Raleigh on October 13th. At the end of my final class I taught 43 amazing people. My students have been hired by Red Hat, Cisco, Fidelity Investments, the Social Security Administration, Prometheus Group, AT&T and others. I’m very proud of what they have accomplished.
President
Creating great software is my passion. It was this passion for problem solving that led me to found Alagad in 1996, while still in highschool. Alagad was a consulting and contracting business focused primarily on web development. While at Alagad, I worked to create diverse systems that businesses depended on. These included mission critical business tools, systems integrations, APIs, automation, intranets, marketing, and public websites. My clients were in many industries including Healthcare, Manufacturing, Higher Education, Technology, and Nonprofits. Through Alagad I worked with more than 50 companies and organizations, including Hasbro, Adobe, Logitech, The United Way of America, Duke University, Michigan State University, and many others, large and small. As the president and owner, I hired employees and managed a 100% remote team across four time zones. I mentored junior programmers and learned from senior programmers. I managed projects and built and inspired teams. Alagad was a catalyst for my personal and professional development. While running Alagad, I learned many programming languages, techniques, frameworks, and tools. Alagad closed in late 2014 and I transitioned to independent consulting as Doug Hughes LLC.
