During my 31 years in professional practice, I have accumulated a wealth of experience working with small, owner-managed enterprises.I have shifted my focus from helping small businesses to mentoring younger professional accountants. About 12 years ago I realized I was dissatisfied with the practice model embraced by many professionals. Tax season in particular was burning me out. My partner and I decided there must a better way to practice. In the ensuing years we developed a practice system that allowed me to work less while providing better service to our clients.I believe practitioners can substantially increase their quality of life and the value of their practice without working any harder. I want to help sole practitioners increase the capacity of their practices and to provide more value-added services to their clients. By doing so, I can influence my profession and, hopefully, help fellow practitioners avoid the burn-out I experienced.An accountant should be a coach, cheerleader and peer rather than simply the scorekeeper. Professionals should charge a fair price for the value provided to the client and that value is not a function of time spent. An accounting office should be a fun and creative place for team members and an open and non-threatening environment for clients.
