About Doug Landers

My position at Honeywell is an ideal role for heavily utilizing my background ranging from one-shot, high cost prototypes to high volume production (6M annually). During my experience at Los Alamos National Laboratory I was involved with mechanical systems design, analysis and testing of prototype hardware under critical environmental conditions. Manufacturing processes and skills ranged from conventional machining to all levels of CNC milling, programming coordinate measuring machines (CMM) with direct computer control (DCC), Automated/CNC Vision Systems, optical comparators and other detailed inspection methods including "old school" inspection methods and precision inspection equipment and tooling. Specialized and unconventional machining methods were also required for fabrication of various materials and part designs.I performed a variety of analyses (both analytical/hand calculations and finite element or finite volume analysis) in support of part and assembly design and testing. I have emphasized the continuous feedback loop between design, analysis and testing, and have now added inspection and SPC methods to complement and integrate these skills. My work at TASER has developed my understanding of molded and die cast parts, as well as other forming and joining processes for high volume production. My design, analysis and testing background has been heavily utilized in my current job duties, and these skills continue to be refined as I was involved in high criticality root cause analysis and corrective action development.Specialties: My skillsets cross several boundaries that seem to be atypical of mechanical engineers, today. I combine basic design skills with analytical and numerical methods, detailed inspection methods, in addition to test planning, execution and reporting in a continuous feedback loop to optimize the design process. In addition, my focus on continuous system level and component level interactions within a system to ensure design effort and design knowledge are balanced.

Doug Landers Work Experience Details
  • Honeywell
    Principal Mechanical Design Engineer
    Honeywell Feb 2019 - Present
    Charlotte, North Carolina, Us
Military &Commercial Avionics design, development, qualification, manufacturing, sustaining engineering, producibility, failure analysis, inspection, testing and root cause analysis and corrective action development.
  • Axon
    Senior Mechanical Engineer
    Axon Apr 2008 - Feb 2019
In addition to readiness for Defense Programs applications, I have been directed to the Research & Development group to lead root cause analysis on existing weapon systems, as well as video systems. Applying my inspection, design, testing & analysis backgrounds, I am charged with leading critical investigations to maximize safety for our customers, and the public. Design and deploy system level high speed, dynamic data acquisition hardware and software, in addition to acquiring detailed data collection and applying data reduction methods maintaining mechanical forensics evidence for redundancy. This is combined with design, manufacturing, testing, analysis and inspection to troubleshoot critical failure modes.Use of force, pressure, acceleration and other transducers combined with numerical and analytical methods, design of experiments, and failure modes analysis. Analysis of vibration, mechanical shock, shock response spectra, vibration response, system damping, impact dynamics, thermal, thermo-elastic distortion, buckling, flow, computational fluid dynamics, pressure, nonlinear time history, and nonlinear material properties combined with finite element analysis of these types has resulted in a combined method of mechanical investigation tools that span multiple disciplines in addition to detailed data acquisition.Combining these skills and techniques with a diverse manufacturing background, these areas of expertise provide vital information to critical investigations of electro-mechanical failure mode testing and analysis.
  • Taser International
Sr. Mechanical Engineer, Taser Defense Programs
    Taser International Mar 2008 - Feb 2019
Provide development, design, analysis, testing and assembly of prototype hardware in support of military defense programs as well as the R&D group.Utilize analysis and testing background to improve mechanical data acquisition capabilities and the generation of designs and databases for environmental test data for use in future product development. Bridge the gap between consumer level and MIL-SPEC testing. Combine this test data with finite element analysis providing critical feedback loops during the design and development process.
  • Los Alamos National Laboratory
    Mechanical Test Engineer, Weapons Technology
Los Alamos National Laboratory Apr 2006 - Mar 2008
    Los Alamos, Nm, Us
In addition to the extensive test planning, execution and reporting required for the Cibola Flight Experiment micro-satellite development, this test experience provided an important component to my testing experience. Provided test engineering support for Weapons and Space Engineering groups. Developed test plans, engineered proper test levels, hardware and fixture design, and performed vibration tests based on available test data or derived from structural analysis. Performed test set up and acquired data for vibration & shock testing, thermal testing and combined environments. Micro and macro vibration analysis performed for a wide variety of high precision instrumentation and rocket launch environments.Developed skills used for analysis and testing of systems under thermal, vibration and shock testing during previous duties as Lead Mechanical Systems Engineer for the Cibola Flight Experiment micro-satellite.
  • Los Alamos National Laboratory
    Mechanical Systems Engineer
Los Alamos National Laboratory Apr 2003 - Apr 2006
    Los Alamos, Nm, Us
Served as Lead Mechanical Systems Engineer for the Cibola Flight Experiment micro-satellite payload and integration, as well as the fully integrated bus/payload Mechanical Engineer.Designed, analyzed, tested and assembled critical flight hardware consisting of payload components, spacecraft bus and support systems. Developed vibration and shock test levels and environmental test plans based on system level response data for the first flight, the STP-1 (Space Test Program) Mission of an EELV (Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle) configured with an ESPA (EELV Secondary Payload Adapter) system. 42 component and sub-system vibration tests were required on proto-qualification hardware prior to flight.High risk test plans were developed for launch vehicle safety and failure mode proof testing. Numerous anlalytical and finite element methods were developed and combined to justify test levels to minimize overtesting while maintaining safe flight margins.Thermal testing, design and analysis were required during payload and integration development. Combined thermal-shock testing was developed based on launch vehicle input as well as test data acquired from subsystem level testing.
  • Los Alamos National Laboratory
    Mechanical Engineer, Physics Division
