National Advisory Board Member
Founded by award-winning Star Wars filmmaker George Lucas in 1991, the George Lucas Educational Foundation is dedicated to transforming education. During my four-year term on the National Advisory Board for the George Lucas Educational Foundation, I contributed to shaping a vision for education that fosters lifelong learning and 21st-century skills. We convened annually at Skywalker Ranch and held additional digital meetings throughout the year. Our focus was on project-based learning, social and emotional learning, and integrating technology into educational content. Together, we aimed to make education more relevant for a technology-driven generation.Presented “Think Inside the Box” to a diverse audience of CEOs, professors from Stanford, Vanderbilt and Harvard, George Lucas, and his Board of Directors, along with the editorial staff of his educational magazine, Edutopia. Impressed with my presentation, they interviewed me and my students, featuring us in the April 2009 issue of their magazine focused on the arts. When I first joined the advisory board, their primary focus was their educational magazine, Edutopia. In one presentation, I designed and proposed giving Edutopia's amazing content more of a social media presence or a mobile phone app, which at that time, only newspapers were doing. Within the year, the Foundation shifted its primary focus to the Internet, with Edutopia.org and its social media presence seeing rapid audience growth. By transitioning magazine and video content online and amplifying its social network presence, Edutopia engaged millions, including teachers, administrators, and parents. Guest speaker at the ACTE (Association for Career & Technical Education) and SREB (Southern Regional Education Board) National Educational Conferences held in New Orleans, Nashville, Atlanta, Mobile, and West Virginia. Educational and humorous presentations include “The Branding Bunch” (a parody of the Brady Bunch), and “Think Inside the Box.”
