My law practice focuses on representing injured persons and policyholders, insureds, and/or beneficiaries against insurance companies pre-suit, at the trial level, and all the way to the N.C. Supreme Court. Over the past 30 years, it has evolved into three primary areas: 1) personal injury claims, 2) workers' compensation claims, and 3) direct claims against insurance carriers for failure to pay a claim, denied coverage, or bad fath. My former partner Celeste Harris and I practiced togther for 20 years when she was appointed to be a Deputy Commisioner (judge) at the Industrial Commission. Thus Maynard & Harris Attorneys at Law, PLLC became the Law Offices of C. Douglas Maynard, Jr., PLLC. I handle personal injury cases arising from automobile, tractor trailer, and motorcycle crashes ("accidents" they are not), as well as workers' compensation cases for those injuredo the job. I also represent persons in insurance (auto, life, health), uninsured / underinsured motorists, bad faith, and unfair and deceptive trade practice claims. My practice includes inadequate security, construction site injuries and legal malpractice. Prior to practicing law I worked for State Farm as an adjuster. I also represent many Spanish speaking clients. Other attorneys frequently refer or associate me to handle coverage related issues, particularly personal or commercial uninsured / underinsured motorist claims. In 2018 I won the seminal UIM insurance law case in which the N.C. Supreme Court ruled UIM coverage was a collateral source reversing the Court of Appeals and determined that the collateral source rule is a substative law on damages. I authored or co-authored multiple amicus briefs submitted to the North Carolina appellate courts by the North Carolina Advocates for Justice on UM/UIM issues. I also regularly present the insurance law seminars to fellow trial lawyers and other groups and have appeared before the N.C. Supreme Court three times in the last six years.
