As marketing and planning coordinator, Doug's role was to use marketing and planning methods to, first and foremost, ensure that revenue did not decrease, and after ensuring stable revenue, he focused on increasing revenue. During his time at RTA, Doug authored the most current bus stop improvement prioritization report; it was unanimously approved by the RTA board of directors in March of 2014. The RTA board is comprised of greater San Luis Obispo area city mayors and county supervisors. To develop the report, he created a methodology compliant with laws, regulations, and policies, and he gathered, compiled, stored, analyzed, and applied data. Doug was also the graphic designer for almost all public-facing content, and he took on other essential marketing and planning duties as needed, including responding to rider and citizen questions, complaints, and requests; working with drivers and other operations staff; developing goals and objectives; conducting transportation planning studies; writing staff reports; managing inter-agency coordination; giving presentations; carrying-out plan implementation; editing press releases; and staffing public meetings.Doug managed up to 10 employees at a time while at RTA. (workload assigned to regular/full-time employee)

While with the Center for Sustainability, Doug improved the sustainability literacy and overall sustainability of the Cal State Fullerton community in many ways. During his time with the Center, he had been accepted to top-ranking civil engineering and planning programs, so he focused on institutionalizing the impactful and well-received programs he established while serving as the Green Campus Team Manager and the Environmental Advocacy Committee Chair and Coordinator. Green Campus is a non-profit organization funded by California utilities focused on 1) Realizing measurable energy savings 2) Supporting green workforce development 3) Infusing energy efficiency into curricula 4) Fostering ongoing awareness about the relationship between energy and the environment.As Green Campus Team Manager, Doug supervised and spearheaded scopes of work by building relationships and facilitating communications among campus stakeholders, including faculty, staff, administrators, students, and members of surrounding communities. He also developed and implemented marketing and media outreach strategies, managed team staffing, encouraged collaborative opportunities, ensured adequate project documentation, and supervised a monthly newsletter. Doug also helped Green Campus develop close working relationships with the campus physical plant. Together, Green Campus and the Physical Plant effectively carried-out many energy and water efficiency and conservation projects. The Green Campus team that Doug managed won the Best Practice Award in the Student Energy Efficiency Program category at the 2011 California Higher Education Sustainability Conference. A highlight of the partnership that Doug helped develop between Green Campus and the Physical Plant was the Campus-wide Lighting Project that saves the campus about 2 million kWhs and $350,000 annually.As team manager of the Green Campus program, Doug managed teams of up to five paid employees and five unpaid interns. As chair and coordinator of the EAC, Doug worked with interested student groups, university officials, and student government to introduce sustainable lifestyle into college life. During this time, Doug drew on his ability to organize, communicate, and inspire to spearhead and orchestrate Cal State Fullerton’s 2011 Earth Week. The event was immensely popular, and the university has since institutionalized Earth Week -- every year since, Cal State Fullerton has opened its campus and invited the community to partake in its ever evolving and improving Earth Week programming.As Chair of the EAC, Doug led up to twenty committee members at a time, led dozens of university employees and hundreds of volunteers as part of the 2011 Earth Week, and influenced the actions of hundreds of university employees through relationships with university management, administration, and elected officials.Additionally, in his role with the EAC, Doug served as a representative on the CSUF President's Sustainability Task Force; he also proposed and facilitated EAC committee leadership and finance restructuring that was approved by the student government board of directors. (Term of service ended June 2011)
