About Doug Purcell

I'm a San Francisco-based technical writer, where I have the opportunity to combine two of my professional passions—technology and writing.Technology is a powerful force in modern society, but without clear instructions on how to use it effectively, it remains an enigma to the average end-user. My role is to craft, organize, clarify, and validate content so that customers can navigate and leverage the complex functionality of enterprise software solutions to their advantage. An added benefit of my work is that when accurate technical documentation is produced, support tickets are reduced, which not only saves the company money but also helps preserve the product’s reputation.

Lead writer for embedded help documentation in Platform Security.Due to my ability to quickly pickup new tools, product knowledge, and processes my manager made me the owner of the embedded help documentation after being on the job for 2-months. Embedded help is a type of in-product help that provides targeted help content to a user in the UI page, based on their role. When I joined ServiceNow roughly 25% of the features in Platform Security had embedded help documentation. I've since extended it to cover 100% of the features reducing friction for customers. Categories documented include Certificate-based Authentication, Edge Encryption, Secrets Management, Data Privacy, and Column Level Encryption Enterprise. • Created 107 new embedded help topics. • Ported embedded help topics from Tokyo to the San Diego and Utah releases of ServiceNow. • Generated maven builds using Jenkins to publish new content on the embedded help server. • Trained a new hire on the process of creating embedded help content. • Documented over 100 net new topics in Utah, and approximately 42 net new topics in the Vancouver store release. • Wrote release notes for Security Center app in the Utah and Vancouver family releases.• Created in-app links to the product documentation. Tools used:• Oxygen XML for authoring • Git/Eclipse for version control• MS Office suite for communication/collaboration • Miro for brainstorming/collaborationI also served as the Community Service Lead for the Black at ServiceNow employee resource group (ERG) and as the EX Culture Champion at the San Francisco offices for two years. In my role with the ERG, I partnered with nonprofit organizations to organize volunteer events aimed at activating and engaging employees. Created a Massive Open Online Course about test driven development in python under a tight 4-week deadline. The course will be published on Coursera and is targeted for working professionals that want to pick up python after work. Test driven development or TDD for short, is an agile methodology to software development in which failing tests are written first and then the minimum code is added to ensure that the test passes. The e-course consists of 4 disparate courses about TDD. I planned, designed, developed, and maintained the e-course and collaborated with business and technical stakeholders to ensure accuracy, quality, and timeliness of deliverables. Topics covered in the course are the red-green-refactor method, continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD), the unittest module, and mock objects. Here's some quick stats about the e-course: • Created 76 quiz questions • Created 10 coding labs • Created 10 forum discussions • Created 11 videos • Created 10 articles • Created 1 capstone project (instructions, code solutions, and starter guide) Here's the skills I demonstrated throughout the instructional design process: • Defined the course objectives and learning outcomes • Created assessment questions to ensure that learning objectives were met • Created, uploaded, formatted, and managed content using Coursera's learning management system (LMS)• Translated ambiguous requirements into concrete deliverables • Authored video scripts • Planned, designed, coded, and tested the capstone project • Applied learning theories such as Blooms Taxonomy to maximize students' engagementBelow are three screenshots from the course. The screenshots show a sample quiz question, description of the final capstone project, and a learning module.
