I had used EMC’s “Smarts” product as the basis of my network management system, and the company was so impressed that they hired me to do development. In addition to software development, I was occasionally asked to go to customer sites to help them design their implementations, or show them how to customize the software using the tools available. Indeed, I was popular with the customers, and was often requested by senior management to visit the customer site to improve vendor relations.• At EMC, I designed and wrote ATM/FR Version 7 adding SNMP management; Switched PVC support (with dynamic mapping); and several GUI enhancements to synchronize with the other Smarts servers.• Wrote a hot Failover system, designed to monitor multiple instances of Smarts servers, detect server failures, and automatically switch management to backup servers. This is used in production to provide zero downtime for some very large customers.• Added notification list subscription support to the PERL API.• Added functions to the Smarts proprietary ASL language.• Redesigned the Smarts trap receiver to add 28 major enhancements. I was hired to support their IBM Mainframe based VTAM Network, but eventually moved on to create, design and implement many emerging technologies. Infonet had a very sophisticated call center system which they eventually shut down because I reduced their incoming calls to virtually nothing. Infonet became the vendor of choice for many of the fortune 500. I won many employee awards for my contributions at Infonet, including a President’s Award for Outstanding Customer Support.• Reconfigured their VTAM Network to support Cross Domain Management and implemented change control the first weekend.• Helped create cross-platform email support, establishing “Notice/Exchange” service, connecting all of the major messaging systems of the day.• Established the world’s first fully integrated worldwide network management system with full root cause detection. The system included automated ticket management and global ticket routing.• Automated customer notifications of all outages, which became so reliable that I reduced our worldwide MTTR by 2/3 and improved our customer satisfaction ratings to 98.5%.• Created policies and documentation for system maintenance and installation and migration.• Provided strategy, direction and leadership in the global implementation of network management systems.• Managed and hired development staff and created training classes to better assist in maintaining and supporting the products and solutions.• As a corporate executive I was able to implement the Company’s goals and objectives creating technological advancements and solutions leading to significant business enhancements. I won an employee of the year award for my efforts.• Sought to automate much of the process, which included writing a tool to perform path table creation; generation of load modules; installation of software; loading, dumping and back-out of load modules for communications processors; library maintenance; dynamic processing of memory dumps caused by failure; and logging of all activity.• The tool provided full access to all the functions necessary to control Boeing’s very complex network with a minimum of personnel. The final tool allowed two people to maintain a network that had previously required five.
