As a kid, I was a nerd. A cool nerd, mind you, meaning that my friends were the only ones who really knew the depth of my nerd’ness, which probably explains why I was so close to the friends that I did have. But never the less, a nerd. To the rest of my classmates I was a rebel – the kid that would debate subject matter with teachers and/or the manner in which it was taught. I was the cool, mysterious, indifferent kid with a small inner circle of friends. Fools.. The truth is, I was addicted to learning. Apparently I also had a low tolerance level for the same old, tired way teachers taught. My science, math, government, and history teachers, for the most part, encouraged my rebelliousness. I think they found my adolescent engagement a refreshing change to the status quo - days filled with routine one-sided lecture. But my English teacher likely still hates me. Turns out there’s not much room to debate sentence structure and verb conjugation. C-…While decades have passed since anyone other than my grandfather has referred to me as a kid, little else has changed. My addiction grows stronger every year while my tolerance for status quo diminishes proportionally. History still remains near and dear to my heart but Leadership has since become my pedagogical passion. Without it there is no change, no challenge, no drive towards excellence – only status quo. And who can live with that?So “yes”, I’m still a nerd. But now it’s my family that accepts me for who I am, not just my friends. Life is good!
