Staff Software Engineer
I develop models for satellite systems. Modeling is done with Wind River Simics in Windows and Linux. Simics uses C/C++, Python, and a superset of C called Device Modeling Language (DML).I use Simics to create models that simulate the functionality of the hardware boards and FPGAs, including customer payload instruments, that comprise the Spacecraft system. I use simulated buses like SpaceWire, CAN, PCI, 1553, etc. to connect the boards. I also model devices like KG-327 Cryptographic Device, Uplink/Downlink (UDL) engine, CAN Controllers, SpaceWire Routers, 1553 Bus Controller and Remote Terminals, etc.Software developers, testers, customers, etc., all use this simulated hardware system (called a Simics project, but also referred to as a Softbench at NGC) to integrate and test long before the hardware is ready. Softbench is also used after the hardware is ready because it provides a more efficient platform to debug on, is more readily available than the limited amount of hardware and is much less expensive than buying more hardware.I developed Simics models for Space Test Program Satellite 6 (STPSAT-6), Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS), Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV), Mission Extension Pods (MEPs), Extensible Avionics Suite (EAS), Virtual System Integration Lab (VSIL), and other satellite programs.I have created many innovative solutions that were absorbed into many other Softbench projects including ‘Socket City’ which has an interface to allow any number of network sockets to be connected to Softbench. I also created many how-to documents that capture complex Simics topics. These docs include instructions on how to integrate 1553 with hardware; setup and use the Simics Debugger in Eclipse; create and use breakpoints; how to determine what Simics code caused a crash; and many other topics.At Northrop Grumman, I am known as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) with Simics.

I worked within Wind River’s Professional Service (PS) organization. PS is chartered with providing customization of Wind River products for customers who need features that are either not on the product road map or will not be available (on the road map) in timely enough fashion for a customer’s needs. PS also develops trade studies, and creates prototypes, to assist customers with understanding, and making decisions, on complex technical topics.I have worked on many different projects for PS including the following. I’ve been involved in studies, and prototypes, that evaluated using Multiple Independent Levels of Security (MILS) on multicore processors and identifying security concerns and mitigations. I’ve created MILS and ARINC 653 Board Support Packages (BSPs). I’ve worked with a committee that created specifications, using UML modeling, for ground stations used to control unmanned aircraft systems. I have setup and used VectorCAST to perform structural coverage testing. I worked as the Quality Assurance Manager (QAM) for a DO-178C VxWorks 6 Certification BSP program. I developed VxWorks-7 software requirements needed for an International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61508 certification. I have worked on Agile projects and have used many different tools including Git, Rally, Google Docs, Doxygen, Polarion, ClearCase, and others. I also get involved with developing proposals and interfacing with customers. I have worked on customization of Simics models and integrated those models into systems that the customers use to simulate their systems. I also travel frequently to work with customers on Simics modeling.

I worked extensively with HAIPE (High Assurance Internet Protocol Encryptor). HAIPE is an Inline Network Encryptor (INE) and is the government version of the commercial Internet Protocol Security (IPsec). I also worked with MAC Security (MACsec) which is an Ethernet Encryptor.I worked with customers to identify requirements as well as with Sales & Marketing to identify/shape current future products. I created system requirements, CONOPS, design, and interface documents. I also made presentations to customers, HW/SW developers, and managers.I created a nearly 1000 page CONOPS after researching all the details of the next generation HAIPE which included IPv6, RIP, SNMPv3 & MIBS, peer discovery and dead peer detection, ESPv3 packet encapsulation, Internet Key Exchange (IKE) and key management, Foreign Interoperability (FI), etc, as well as general TCP/IP networking concepts. After CONOPS was written, I gave a 4-day presentation to HW and SW developers about these details in order to jump start the project. Presentation and CONOPS were well received.I created security documentation, such as the Security Evaluation Document (SED), Covert Channel Analysis (CCA), Fail Safe Design Analysis (FSDA), and Information Assurance Security Requirements Directive (IASRD) compliance documentation, to provide evidence to the NSA that the product was secure and could be certified.I developed some of the HAIPE IKE software which ran under the VxWorks RTOS.
Software Engineer (Contractor)
I designed, coded, integrated, & tested software used in cryptographic devices for the F-22 aircraft & ground station. Software ran under General Dynamics Secure Operating System (SOS) and the Raytheon Avionics Operating System (AOS).I worked with the customer on difficult timing issues found during F-22 avionics integration testing then duplicated and resolved the issues. I created a real-time testing environment, called Turbo Mode, which allowed all of these timing issues to be duplicated and debugged locally as opposed to in the large F-22 avionics integration facilities. I created applications, called Turbo Apps, which ran in the Turbo Mode environment to duplicate/debug these timing issues. Turbo Mode provided a huge cost savings – without it, the project may have been extended for months while resolving these tricky timing issues at the F-22 avionics integration facilities where lab time was in high demand and the ability to troubleshoot the crypto device was limited.I also worked extensively in the Multifunctional Cryptographic System (MCS) project lab to integrate waveforms onto the General Dynamics Advanced INFOSEC Machine (AIM) cryptographic device.I coded and tested Security Validation (SV) test cases. I demonstrated the SV tests to the NSA during witness testing and answered all their questions.
Software Engineering Manager
I built and managed a team of 28 software engineers in a multi-site, multi-company, and multi-nation VoIP project. This device was a highly integrated Voice-Over-IP (VoIP) semiconductor solution that merged multiple voice and data channels for transmission over a single Ethernet or ATM broadband access line.

I developed Firmware for commercial Security ASICs. Firmware was developed for each of the hardware Functional System Blocks (FSBs), e.g. DES, PCMCIA, PLL, GPIO, Hash Engines, Secure Memory Management Unit (SMMU), etc. Firmware was developed on SUN workstations, under UNIX, and was tested on VHDL Test Benches. I worked very closely with HW Engineers to debug issues found during simulation (by looking at waveforms) and in the lab (using lab equipment). I performed Validation Tests to verify the board, chip, and firmware functioned correctly after the chip and board were fabricated.I trained new Firmware Engineers during a two week training class I put together. Class taught them the ARM processor architecture and instruction set, how to set up and run simulations, basics of security, etc. The class allowed Firmware Engineers to ramp up quickly, in a couple weeks, as opposed to several months - so it proved to be a huge cost savings. I taught this class many times and it was always well received.
