About Doug Tidwell

I have years of experience as a technical marketer, developer evangelist, and content creator, presenting complicated ideas in a clear and compelling way. But first and foremost, I tell stories. Stories are the best (and sometimes only) way to connect with your customers. If I can't tell a story that convinces someone that a product will make their lives better, they're not going to buy the product.I have created many customer- and developer-oriented videos accompanied by related articles, code repos, and container images. In addition to video-based evangelism, I have spoken hundreds of times at conferences, technology briefings, customer sites, and universities around the world. The dozens and dozens of articles that I have written have generated millions of page views over the years.I am the author of O'Reilly's book on XSLT, a copy of which makes the perfect gift for all occasions. My writing has been translated into eight languages. I am also a developer with many years of experience. With a Masters in Computer Science and a Bachelors in English, I have a unique ability to take in-depth, hardcore technical material and then explain it compellingly to audiences, both online and in person. At Gradle I worked closely with Engineering to create release notes and sales enablement materials, making sure Marketing had a complete release plan ready when the product shipped. I also created customer-facing content for the company's website and blog.My work at Redis was focused on technical content that explained the reasons Redis Enterprise can actually save money for enthusiasts of open-source Redis. That content was primarily videos, but I also created blog posts, solution pages, customer surveys, white papers and webinars. At CloudBees I was responsible for establishing a corporate-wide demo environment and its underlying infrastructure. I also created many videos, webinars, blogs, e-books, and other technical content. At Red Hat I published long-form content that covered technical topics in detail. I created Coderland, a fictional theme park used to tell stories about developers using technology to solve problems. I also produced videos for Red Hat products and technologies such as Eclipse Che and podman. Finally, at IBM I created the developerWorks Mailbag, a series of weekly videos that answered questions on the minds of developers. I also worked with professors at universities around the world.

  • Redis
    Senior Technical Marketing Manager
    Redis Oct 2020 - Jan 2022
    Mountain View, Ca, Us
I created videos, blogs, articles, and other content to tell stories about Redis products and technologies. Here’s a sample of some of the types of content I created. “The Coffee Test” is a competitive video I put together for a campaign. (The name of the competitive product has been censored to protect the guilty.) There are also a couple of technical videos here that show developers how to use Redis for caching (the #1 use case for Redis) and how DevOps can use the open-source Grafana framework to monitor their Redis instances and applications. Finally, I created a soap opera called “The Lives of IT Professionals.” These are 30-second spots that get across a single competitive point about Redis Enterprise.
  • Cloudbees
    Technical Marketing Director
    Cloudbees Aug 2019 - Sep 2020
    San Jose, California, Us
My work at CloudBees was to make DevOps accessible to technologists around the world. Below are some examples of the content I created to show off our products. The "Concept to Customer" video uses the Thunder Demo system put together by a team of technologists across the company. Our goal in building the system was to demonstrate our products working together seamlessly. The “Pipeline Policies” video features the nefarious Evil Doug, who schemes to lock up system resources for his sinister plot. Pipeline policies, as you would expect, save the day. The last video is a technical deep dive showing how to use a beta feature of the Google Cloud Platform (support for Windows nodes in Kubernetes) inside CloudBees CI.

One of my major projects was Coderland, a fictional theme park I created as a frame story for demos and tutorials. The first Coderland ride, The Compile Driver, was a comprehensive tutorial on serverless computing with Knative. You can see the complete tutorial at https://developers.redhat.com/coderland/serverless/ or view the videos below.

My previous assignment was Cloud computing with a strong emphasis on keeping the cloud open. I did technical presentations and demos to developers as well as high-level presentations to architects and executives. In the past, my work has been focused on technologies such as XML, Java, Web services, XForms, Eclipse and Service Component Architecture. My overarching role was to help developers, architects, executives, analysts and the press understand the importance of new technologies, products, and standards. The videos below are episodes of the developerWorks Mailbag that cover chatbots and Kubernetes secrets.
