Dougall Broadfoot graduated in Civil Engineering from the University of Queensland, despite holding a preference for cricket and baseball over his studies.He worked initially with the Department of Main Roads, Queensland, before joining a road surfacing contracting company owned by Shell Australia. In his subsequent extensive career with the Shell Group, he enjoyed roles in many of the mainland states of Australia. These were largely in bitumen related markets of Shell and its subsidiary or associated companies but also included a period heading the Australian Marketing Operations Division encompassing national transport and distribution, marketing related engineering, quality and production. His postings included periods in Shell International in London, in Papua New Guinea and culminated in heading up the national road surfacing organisation, Pioneer Road Services, incorporating responsibility for subsidiary businesses in Hong Kong, Shanghai, PNG and Solomon Islands. His external roles included those of directorship and Chairman of the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association (AAPA) of which he was appointed a Life Member in 1999 and Vice President of the Australian Road Federation.After failing an attempted early retirement, he returned to the world of asphalt as the Victorian State Executive of AAPA and moved to his current role in Sydney in mid-2009. Beyond the world of bituminous materials, he enjoys sports, reading and music of all kinds, but with a particular fondness for the concerts of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
