Doug is a Principal at Thornton Tomasetti, serving as the Office Director for the firm's Philadelphia office and leading the local Protective Design & Security group. Doug is a licensed professional engineer (PE) with over 20 years of experience and a broad background in building protective design and site security. He specializes in anti-terrorist, blast-resistant design of new facilities and renovations. Doug has supported Clients worldwide performing Threat, Vulnerability and Risk Assessments (TVRAs) and developing mitigations to protect against vehicle ramming, facade debris hazard, progressive collapse, forced entry and ballistic attacks. Doug’s portfolio of over 200 protective design projects spans government, military and private buildings, including United States embassies, courthouses, office buildings, bio-safety laboratories, transportation hubs and major league sports venues. He has worked on multiple facilities that have received SAFETY Act award from U.S. Department of Homeland Security.Doug is able to advise Clients on reasonable and appropriate solutions to reduce or mitigate the risk of terrorist threats and work collaboratively with A-E design teams to implement physical, technical and operational security solutions. Some of Doug's signature projects include U.S. Embassies in Russia and China, the new NATO Headquarters facility in Belgium, the U.S. Department of Transportation Headquarters in Washington, DC, the New Terminal One at JFK International Airport in New York City, the Golden State Warrior's new Chase Center NBA arena in San Francisco, and both the World Trade Center redevelopment in downtown New York and renovation and rebuild of the Pentagon following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
