I discovered my enthusiasm for the human condition while an undergraduate in the Physiology Laboratory at Glasgow University. Embarking on a peripatetic academic career spanning the next twelve years, opportunities took me to centres of excellence in Holland and Ireland and, closer to home, both Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities. Principally based at the Bioengineering Unit, University of Strathclyde, I was part of a world-class team specialising in restoring walking abilities to patients suffering paralysis. As a result of the experience gained developing solutions for these patients the opportunity arose to bring the team’s innovative technology to a wider market.Inspired to enter the commercialisation process after attending a night-class led by Jonathan Levie at the Hunter Centre, University of Strathclyde, I won a Royal Society of Edinburgh Enterprise Fellowship and subsequently co-founded PAL Technologies in 2001.
