Professional Excellence Development Programme - Gas Turbine Supply Chain EngineeringThe professional excellence graduate scheme consisted of 6 attachments over an 18 month period. This ensured I developed a good breadth of knowledge of how the engineering function performs within the business and exposed myself to a wide range of challenges and business environments. Highlights of the scheme included:• Working in a stress analysis team for combustion components, my work resulted in a patent application to improve combustor performance• A design and make group project with other graduates to deliver a test rig for compressor components, which we successfully accomplished and provided valuable test data to the compressors team. This included design and manufacture of development engine parts. I was responsible for all conceptual and CAD design of the rig, as well as the bill of materials and manufacturing.• Creation of an automated workflow to analyze dynamic stress in turbine blades using FEA software.• Use of robust design to conceptualize, risk assess and present a re-designed critical part for a legacy engine• Working in a flow verification laboratory for turbine cooling systems, the testing I conducted was unique to Rolls-Royce and of great interest to the aerothermal community.• Working on the manufacturing process for composite parts, I was responsible for automated fibre placement process improvement and submitted a business case outlining the savings to the company.

As a summer intern I was assigned to several projects in order to gain as much experience as possible.My main project was the design of an offshore pipe clamping assembly. This required innovative design to meet a demanding design brief. I was required to present my concept designs to the customer, develop their concept of choice, perform stress calculations and analysis to verify design. My deliverables were engineering drawings to permit manufacture of the assembly and a technical report outlining design calculations.I was also involved in the design of a high pressure, high temperature test chamber for sub-sea drilling equipment. This has several unique design requirements and liaison with several different parties was required to ensure the project progressed smoothly.I was also required to perform drawing checks on sub-sea parts.

As sales staff, I was required to advise customers on bicycle related purchases. This required good communicative skills and a wide range of product knowledge. I was also required to operate cash tills, perform stock takes and set up interest free finance payments, this required good numerical ability and a degree of responsibility. As a bicycle mechanic, I was required to set up, repair and upgrade a wide variety of bicycles and parts. This required mechanical skill as well as careful and consistent working to ensure jobs were completed correctly in a timely manner.
