I was able to serve two years with my wife as full time missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in New Zealand. It was a wonderful experience and we loved being there.

As founder and president of FutraMed, I lead a team of highly technical individuals in the development of a medical device for the purpose of treating substance abuse and reliving pain. The technology for the device is based on the work of Dr. Aime Limoge of Paris France and the Limoge current which he developed. In collaboration with Dr. Limoge and his associates, our team was able to effectively replicate the Limoge current and created a device that is battery powered, meets regulatory requirements,and is easy to manufacture. Preliminary testing has been completed in France in which the device was shown to be very effective in reducing pain in patients that do not benefit from the administration of additional drugs. The following abstract of a paper I presented at the 55th Annual Meeting of the Health Physics Society, July 01, 2010 describes much of my work at Aribex.The concept of a handheld, portable dental intraoral x-ray system being available for dental use seemed a very practical and useful concept. Even as dentists began to embrace this new technology with enthusiasm and passion, radiation control agencies and regulators looked at this new technology with considerable skepticism. For years regulators have insisted that operators be a predetermined distance from the x-ray head and not hold it in their hands. X-ray devices are now being created that are designed to be handheld. Third party testing confirms that they are safe however convincing regulators both within the United States and internationally that they are safe has been a major challenge. This paper describes the experience of one manufacturer and its efforts to work cooperatively with the regulatory community to inform and demonstrate the features that were designed into the device which make it safe for handheld use. The company's journey includes working with the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors (CRCPD), testing facilities, dentists, universities, individual state regulatory departments, and various international regulatory bodies. This effort has resulted in several significant actions including a new regulatory classification for handheld x-ray devices, approval for handheld use in over 40 states and several countries, updates to the Suggested State Regulations for the Control of Radiation maintained by CRCPD to include handheld devices, a guideline published by FDA for handheld devices, and rule changes in several state and internationally. There are now thousands of dental practitioners and tens of thousands of individual dental patients that have benefited from this new class of handheld x-ray technology throughout the USA and the world.
