Originally from the small town of Ticonderoga, NY, Douglas graduated from Boston College in 2022, where he studied Communication and Management for Social Impact. His post-graduation plans would have surprised him just a few years prior: completing a year of service. After a few conversations with friends, he contemplated the idea of applying the Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JVC), a service organization rooted in the values of social justice, community, simple living, and spirituality. Through the application process, he landed the opportunity that would reshape his vision: serving in a Domestic Violence shelter in San Diego, CA.While there, the shape of the role evolved in unexpected ways, initially with the initial focus on case management and supporting families, before quickly expanding to managing conflicting timelines in the shelter’s rehabilitation project. Douglas coordinated efforts across teams to minimize disruptions for clients. When timelines aligned, he facilitated site upgrades and ensured compliance with grant requirements for client-focused programs.Throughout the year, Douglas found the work both challenging and enlightening, expanding his career vision while deepening his appreciation for the values JVC had instilled in him. When it came time to move on at the end of the year, he already committed to a second year of service, joining the University Ministry team at the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM). There, he worked to engage students through service opportunities, built partnerships with local organizations, and managed the Service in the City tutoring program, which serves students from underserved backgrounds.Shaped by the experiences of those two years, Doug has found himself enjoying hobbies that include taking in the local professional sports scenes, exploring national parks, and marathons – not for the running, but the idea of pushing the limits we impose on ourselves while getting a unique opportunity to explore 26.2mi on foot, if only for a banana, t-shirt, and medal. If you have made it this far, congratulations on completing a marathon (length summary). Your reward: more below.Looking to the future, Douglas is open to a variety of roles, with a particular interest in the sports or nonprofit space.
