About Douglas Buell
My passion is mentoring. Nothing compares to watching someone grow and reach their potential knowing I positively influenced their success. Seeing people open their eyes to new possibilities and continually set and reach their goals is priceless. It is a privilege to be there for people during times of struggle. Whether they need a shoulder to lean on in a crisis or tough love and redirection after a poor decision, I strive to assess the needs of the person and provide the needed support. In my previous roles as Traffic Manager (fleet manager) and Senior Vessel Scheduler, I supported novice schedulers learning their role including teaching strategies to maximize cargo and minimize ballast, office etiquette, and best practices for being on call. In addition, I have 18 years of experience directing and coaching barbershop harmony choruses. In that role, I provide both group and individual instruction. As a Traffic Manager of a Great Lakes dry bulk fleet, I led a team of Vessel Schedulers to reach customer commitments through both strategic planning and tactful customer negotiations. I routinely modeled customer commitments over the Great Lakes shipping season and was responsible for customer relationship management (CRM). I creatively found viable solutions to unplanned contingencies given the significant time constraint. During my tenure as department manager, I was able to bridge a communication gap with the Engineering, Operations, and Personnel departments, fostering interdepartmental collaboration that allowed us to shift dock delays from lost time to an opportunity to perform preventative maintenance, fueling, and drills preventing costly future delays.I hold a B.S. in Marine Transportation from State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College and an active USCG Third Mate Unlimited Tonnage License. Additionally, I earned a M.S. with Honors in International Transportation Management form SUNY Maritime and received the Captain William Sembler Award for academic excellence. I have a current Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC) and Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). My active endorsements include: Vessel Security Officer (VSO); Company Security Officer (CSO); Crowd Management; Radar Observer, Unlimited; Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS); Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA); Element Seven GMDSS Radio Operator License; CPR and First Aid, STCW 95. In addition, I hold a Tankerman Person in Charge (PIC) Dangerous Liquids (DL) endorsement in continuity. Prior to working shoreside, I spent 5 years sailing.
