  • Build Healthy Places Network
    Executive Director
Build Healthy Places Network Jan 2013 - Jan 2023
    San Francisco, California, Us
    • I founded the Build Healthy Places Network (BHPN, www.buildhealthyplaces.org) as a national nonprofit with the mission to transform the way organizations work together across the sectors of health, community development, and finance to more effectively reduce poverty, advance racial equity, and improve health in neighborhoods across the United States. • I led BHPN’s successful work bringing together leaders, practitioners, investors, and policymakers, from across sectors to develop new collaborations and partnerships, drive greater community investments, and leverage each other’s expertise for greater impact on health and prosperity. • As a program of California’s Public Health Institute, to support BHPN’s work I raised more than $18 million over 10 years from foundations, including Robert Wood Johnson, Kresge, W.K. Kellogg, California Wellness, and Blue Shield of California, and by providing fee-for-service advisory support directly to community development, public health, and healthcare organizations working to advance new cross-sector partnerships and co-investments across the country. • Through my leadership, BHPN built a national reputation as a neutral and well-respected broker, convener, and driver for the new field of community development investment and health. Our actionable analyses and syntheses shifted organizations’ perspectives on cross-sector work, informed their implementation efforts, and helped lead to new investments and novel partnerships.• Sample publications include Principles for Building Healthy and Prosperous Communities (available at https://tinyurl.com/yramtwxs) and From Outcomes to Impact, an exploratory model and calculator for estimating the health returns of comprehensive community development (available at https://tinyurl.com/mtr2tf9j)

    Office Of The U.S. Surgeon General 2019 - 2021
    • I co-led the development and publication of the Surgeon General’s Report on Community Health & Economic Prosperity. This report drew together dozens of national experts in business, health, community development, and finance to make the case for an increased role for private sector corporations in investing in neighborhoods – using the community development sector as financial intermediaries – to maximize health and prosperity and strengthen the own business environments.• Report available at https://www.hhs.gov/surgeongeneral/reports-and-publications/community-health-economic-prosperity/index.html
