I teach international business in the Commerce program. In the past I've also taught the Global Strategy course in the Queen's-Cornell Executive MBA program, the Executive MBA program, the Master of Management program, and the full time MBA.I have been responsible for the stream of instruction and personal development activity in the School of Business's PhD program that was intended to prepare future professors to become effective educators. I also am an active educator myself, working nationally and internationally with the Queen's Executive Development Centre, as well as for my own clients. My original research was in the area of networks and strategic alliances. There, I examined how companies built and operated alliances that endured. Now, I'm more interested in practical questions of executive learning and effective company operation, and am pursuing them through three streams of activity:First, along with a co-author, I'm compiling information on the management of analytics (also known as "big data") within companies. Given the sharp uptake in management interest in this area, I'm confident that the findings of the book that this work will produce will prove to be beneficial to its users. Second, I'm working on an article about the roots of performance, which are the basic functions of management. Consistent with the research on expertise and deliberate practice, I argue that companies that fail to give attention to doing the basics well will experience significant difficulty in environments that display increasing complexity and volatility. Third, I also have a deep interest in the subject of measurement and their effect on people in organizations and in societies. I'm collecting material on this subject now, and the early findings are remarkable in their potential impact.
