About Douglas Scott

As a designer of both websites and mobile apps, I am obsessed with user experience. I love to conduct research, synthesize information, solve problems and create smart and engaging experiences that inspire users and clients alike. All of my work in user experience begins with establishing empathy for the user by asking the following questions: What does the user want? What motivates the user? What can we do for the user? This desire to understand and share the feelings of another helps me better comprehend user needs and goals. As such, it is my aim to seek out and eliminate the barriers that frustrate users, while making every digital experience easier, more useful and satisfying. In addition to my work as a user experience designer, I have had a lengthy career as a graphic designer in an advertising agency setting. This history gives me an advantage over those without this background, especially when creating comprehensive interaction design documentation as I strive to communicates potential design obstacles and transform them into potential creative opportunities. As a result, the client, stakeholders and UX team leadership can make informed decisions about project scope, budget and timelines. This documentation includes: personas, scenarios, site map, diagrams, task flows, sketches, wireframes and prototypes. It is also my mission to produce inventive, thoughtful and relevant work for clients that remains faithful to established brand strategy. After all, creating compelling user experiences that resonate with a client’s brand will ultimately enhance the customer’s relationship with a brand’s products and services. I'd love to work with you to solve your user experience problems - let's get started!

Senior User Experience Designer

Toronto, Canada Area

Create category defining digital products that ensure a customer experience that is more satisfying, engaging and relevant across all brand touch points.

Apr 2015 - Jan 2022

User Experience Designer (Freelance)

Toronto, Canada Area

In my role as User Experience Designer at Career Cruising I implemented the use of comprehensive heuristic analysis of existing product information architecture and navigation flows to familiarize stakeholders and UX team with the current product’s user experience issues. I also crafted high level contextual scenarios that described the product requirements from user’s perspective. This enabled the mapping of low level work flows detailing the sequence of steps the user would take to accomplish their goals. The resulting UX documentation enabled project decision makers to determine the scope, budget and time lines for the project’s desired future state.

Feb 2014 - Aug 2014

User Experience Designer (Freelance)

Toronto

While a member of Cundari’s digital studio, I led the user experience design of the online shopping cart for their client Tilley. I introduced the concept of rapid prototypes to help the team meet the project’s multiple requirements within the constraints of a narrow time line. The project was dependant on an existing prototyping framework that focused on front-end development. I replaced it with a rapid prototyping framework that put the UX designer in charge of conceiving, experimenting with and communicating UX. That way Cundari was able reduce the time between requirement changes and design iterations that, ultimately, led to the project being delivered on time.

Sep 2013 - Feb 2014

Interactive Designer (Freelance)

Toronto, Canada Area

As a interactive designer with Grip's digital studio team, I engaged in multiple large scale projects including a full website re-design for both the Women's Executive Network and Honda Canada. To ensure the successful deployment of the Honda website redesign, I headed the introduction of a new agency-wide digital asset management strategy. The generation of new thinking about asset work flows was required; from early asset acquisition to final distribution. I led the creation of essential UX documentation such as task flows, user scenarios, content strategy and information architecture. Additionally, I spearheaded recommendations for features and functionality to the software development team. For the Women's Executive Network, I worked closely with the Agile development team to redesign the website's shopping cart user experience and interface design. The project required a careful adherence to complex product requirements and multiple user task flows to navigate numerous conversion funnels. This focus ensured that the new UX/UI succeed in increasing user conversation rates.
