About Doug Norton

I am teaching faculty in the Department of Economics at Florida State University where I demonstrate to students the power of economics to explain the world around them. Since joining the faculty (August 2020) I have taught Health Economics, Econometrics, Economics of State and Local Government, and Intermediate Microeconomic Theory.But, man cannot live on economics alone. I am also the Director of the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) program at FSU. The PPE program started at FSU because of a recognition that wrestling with big questions requires an interdisciplinary approach. What are the tradeoffs? Is it politically feasible? Is it morally desirable? PPE programs lower the transaction costs and facilitate gains from trade across disciplines.In this role as Director of the PPE program at FSU, I develop and teach PPE curriculum, arrange our speaker series, lead book clubs, organize conferences and events, and advise the FSU PPE Student Group.While most of my time is spent teaching and building the PPE program, I continue to engage the research community with an interdisciplinary approach to questions about poverty, taxation, charity, and culture. My research has been published in outlets such as Experimental Economics, Public Choice, and Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization. Before coming to FSU I was the Senior Economist at an educational technology startup called MobLab (think mobile laboratory). Our mission was to bring "labs" and hands-on experiments that are common to STEM fields into social science and business education. With MobLab, students around the world use their smartphones and other devices to access a cloud-based platform to participate in experiments. In my role, I developed curriculum and experiments for business, economics, and political science and promoted MobLab through conferences, guest lectures, and more.
