About Doug Young

Doug Young is a Guitarist, Author, Software Developer at Peghead Nation. He possess expertise in java, c++, software development, python, linux and 9 more skills. Colleagues describe him as "Doug is an amazingly effective and efficient technical contributor. I worked with him as a peer for two years at both Altavista/Overture and Yahoo!, and then managed him for about two years as part of the US Machine Learned Ranking team. During the time I managed him, he was responsible for our data set generation process, a very complex process that was vulnerable to upstream failures in other teams. Three attributes stood out to me about Doug. First, his ability to become proficient with new software and technology quickly was very important as we integrated new technologies into three different search platforms. Second, his ability to interface with people with different backgrounds from VPs to software engineers to scientists helped him become a central fixture in the organization. Finally, Doug worked efficiently and effectively, completing tasks faster than estimated and doing them with very high quality.", "Doug enjoys a worldwide reputation as a wonderful fingerstyle acoustic guitarist. His compositions are gorgeous and his approach to the music is obviously heartfelt. Check out his website to hear his music: http://www.dougyoungguitar.com/. For the past several years Doug has written feature articles for Acoustic Guitar Magazine, which is the world's foremost magazine on the subject. The articles are thorough, interesting, and enlightening!.", and "Doug Young is the ultimate in a principal scientist, easily approachable, open to communications, and eminently qualified in many areas. I worked with Doug on a visual builder tool,as well as slightly around a notepad project. Doug is one of a very few people that can create a vision, articulate it, build it, and deliver it. I recommend Doug for any project, products, strategic or tactical."

Listed skills include Java, C++, Software Development, Python, and 10 others.

Principal Scientist

Sunnyvale, Ca, Us

Member of a team that created Yahoo!’s innovative and patented machine-learning approach to web search ranking algorithms and architecture. Joined Yahoo when Altavista/Overture was acquired by Yahoo in 2003. AltaVista's approach to ranking was one of a small set of technologies that was applied directly to Yahoo's search product. Starting with the small team from AltaVista, we developed and expanded on the prior machine-learned ranking approach for the Yahoo search platform. The process involved working with teams of editors to develop training data, managing the data, extracting features from the core search engine, applying learning techniques, integrating the learned functions into the search engine efficiently, developing new features and working with research teams on related efforts. Ultimately, the effort touched on most parts of the search infrastructure. The team and approach grew to encompass both US and all international markets, and achieved relevance that was competitive with Google's. We also applied the technology to other projects, including Yahoo's paid inclusion program, paid listings, and Yahoo Answers.

Altavista

Joining AltaVista as part of the acquisition of Zip2, I helped re-purpose Zip2's HomeBase platform to become the AltaVista Live! portal. Later lead the effort to create an entirely new java-based front end to replace and unify the many different front end technologies AltaVista had acquired over time. The resulting Gladiator platform successfully scaled to AltaVista's heavy traffic and feature requirements. Lead an effort to improve AltaVista's search relevance in the face of Google's growing dominance. Defined and instituted daily metrics to measure our progress. With two others, developed the processes around a new approach to ranking using machine learning. Following Overture's purchase of AltaVista and FAST, worked with the FAST team to integrate our machine-learned ranking approach to their search engine. Part of the due diligence team that lead to AltaVista's subsequent acquisition by Overture and ultimately Yahoo.

Zip2

Joined Zip2 fairly late in its evolution, and initially worked to improve the basic product, which was an early SAAS software publishing platform that served the New York Times, Knight-Ridder, the Washington Post and many more - over 200 newspapers in the US as well as Europe. Met with clients to understand needs, and improve the features and performance of the product. Worked closely with Elon Musk, the founder of Zip2 to develop the "HomeBase" product, a new portal platform based on the underlying Zip2 technology. HomeBase later formed the basis of AltaVista Live after AltaVista acquired Zip2.

Principal Scientist

Sgi

Milpitas, Ca, Us

Part of the initial core team that developed SGI's CaseVision product line, a full featured software development environment featuring a graphical debugger, powerful performance and analysis tools. To this day, I am unaware of any software tools that provide all the capabilities of this system, which was ahead of its time. Created ViewKit, a C++ application framework on top of X/Motif, which was first intended to simplify development of CaseVision, but later became the basis of SGI's desktop environment, and was available to customers as well. ViewKit was used in products that ranged from Alias/Wavefront's Maya 3D visualization tool to a NASA prototype of a Mars Rover controller. My book, Object-Oriented Programming for OSF/Motif was published by Prentice Hall, and described the principles behind ViewKit as and also provided a lightweight version of ViewKit. The basic approach to working with Motif outlined in the book was widely adopted and used by many 3rd party tool vendors, including ICS's Builder Xcessory and X-Designer. Working with ICS, I created an SGI version of Builder Xcessory, RapidApp, for ViewKit which was more tuned to supporting SGI's software environment. Worked on early integration of Java into SGI's software environment, when SGI was one of the first licensees of Java. Worked at Netscape on behalf of SGI to add Unix plugin support to the Netscape browser to enable SGI's 3D VRML viewer. Later authored the Prentice Hall book Netscape Developer's Guide to Plugins. As one of the founding members of SGI's first Web Division, helped create the Cosmo software line. The Cosmo Builder was one of the first interactive Java based UI builders, which used introspection to support a very dynamic environment.Founding member of the NetBook team, an effort to create a high-end web-enabled highly graphical tablet computer using OpenGL for a unique pen-based user environment. Microsoft acquired the IP from SGI for use in their Tablet PC.

Member Of Technical Staff

Houston, Texas, Us

Part of Martin Griss's Software Languages Laboratories. I helped research programming environments and was part of a small team that developed "Ivo," a software development environment that included a debugger, code analysis tools and our own multi-window version of Gnu Emacs. Ivo was in wide use within HP, and motivated HPs effort to create a commerical software development environment. Worked with product teams on the newly emerging X Windows product, and authored the first book on the Motif user interface toolkit, "The X Window System: Programming and Applications with OSF/Motif".
