About Douglas Bell

Lateral thinker.Ignore my education & business experience for a second, as one of the things that makes me so different is being able to draw on extraordinary life experiences; like living in West Africa as the only white man in town, or driving down India in a 3-wheeler. My 20s were packed with activity like this, that taught me far more than studies at Harvard.I've experienced life at the fringes... living in, and travelling in 40 different countries around the world, as diverse as Ethiopia, Peru, Morocco, Bosnia, South Africa, Iceland and India. Facing 3rd-world arrests, breakdowns, language barriers, guns, corruption, wild animals, bureaucracy, black markets, junkies, gangs, extreme poverty, hypothermia, crooks and land mines... So life has been one great adventure after another. A constant learning experience. This helps me to view problems and opportunities from a completely different perspective. It's deep-end travel experiences like these that led me to create Frontier.Add into that, the privileged perspective gained from setting up London Innovators; a birds-eye view on innovation, in one of the most creative cities in the world.

  • Freelance
    Marketing & Innovation Consultant
    Freelance Jan 2013 - Aug 2013
    London, United Kingdom
Most companies find it hard to think creatively and to challenge existing practice because they have a narrow perspective. My job is to change that... to inspire big thinking. It's a radical, fun process, followed up with smart action plans; how to exploit and manage the very best of these new ideas. How can we create new messages with viral potential? How can we engage new customers through digital media? How can we smash the competition through product or service innovation? Business model innovation? How can we position the brand to get people excited? My approach is heavily influenced by research at Harvard, and a deep professional interest in Behavioural Science. Want to know what makes people tick? What makes people *share*? What makes people loyal and passionate? Behavioural Science is all about that. How did company ABC solve problem XYX? If you take time to look around, you can build on brilliant ideas from un-obvious sources, turning them to your own advantage. That's what creativity is all about.

  • Black Bear
    Founder & Ceo
    Black Bear 2006 - 2008
    United Kingdom
Working with a young team on cutting-edge media products at the dawn of Web 2.0. An award-winning publishing business that combined a national magazine with 'new media'. The mission was to break through to an intelligent, disenfranchised young audience by producing media of a very different tone & style from the mainstream. The business gave big name advertisers like Puma, Apple, Becks, and Sony Music access to an 'impossible-to-reach' 18-24 audience. The company created 100% user-generated media, with professional management and production resources injected in. We built a national distribution network for the print magazine, with marketing reps covering 87 university campuses around the UK. We designed and built a unique social media portal, upon which users could collaborate on projects and build their own professional portfolio. Imagine a highly sophisticated Yellow Pages for creatives (a skill-based network), through which we could manage talent to produce media content that young people loved. At the heart of the social network was an ever-growing magazine. A gigantic blog and community of creatives. It was a huge undertaking. The prospect of taking the magazine global was considerable - the network of contributors already was global. But our timing was ugly. The 2008 economic crash destroyed a great business. 2nd-round investment (and launch) were dramatically put on hold. Game over.Amongst many proud achievements was recognition by The Entrepreneur's Forum, and winning The Blueprint Award against some incredible competition. We were able to convince a series of VCs and Entrepreneurs that this was a business with huge potential. Despite making many mistakes. As CEO, I took the lead in many areas of the business, notably:> Product R&D (on a shoestring budget)> Brand Design & Youth Market Research> Guerilla Marketing Strategy> Multi-media Content Creation & Design> Content Management Systems Design> Investor Relations & Corporate Strategy
