  • Masterpiece Designers-Builders- Remodelers (Masterpiece-Dbr)
    President And Ceo
    Masterpiece Designers-Builders- Remodelers (Masterpiece-Dbr) Dec 2013 - Sep 2015
    Webb City Missouri
A Design/Build firm providing residential & light retail design services. Once the design & project budget have been established we than work as the General Contractor for over 90% of the projects that we designed. Our work is primarily in the four state area with the majority of our projects are within a 90 mile radius of Joplin Missouri.Masterpiece-DBR is the spin off of the formerly known JCDM Home Builders when we separated from Joplin Construction Design & ManagementAfter four years of helping to rebuild the Joplin area from the 2011 tornado, the need for new or restoration work dried up to a trickle. My wife had a strong desire to move closer to her family in the Atlanta area so I accepted a position with John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods, I sold most of the assets of Masterpiece-DBR to an employee and a group of investors. The company was renamed Masterpiece Builders and continues to operate but now builds mostly in the Branson Missouri and the lakes areas of the Ozarks in Southern Missouri/Northern Arkansas.
  • Jcdm Home Builders
    General Manager
Jcdm Home Builders May 2011 - Dec 2013
    Joplin, Missouri Area
A few days after the terrible May 2011 tornado that devastated Joplin Missouri, I traveled to my home town to check on my family. I witnessed an incredible need for the victims of the tornado to have a true construction professional with experience in insurance restoration assist them in their rebuilding efforts. I joined with Joplin Construction Design & Management, a local general contractor that focused only on commercial projects using pre-fab steel buildings and erecting them mostly for various churches with very tight budgets. I was tasked to form a new division, JCDM Home Builders, for Joplin Construction Design & Management. JCDM Home Builders was based upon the experiences I had from operating Masterpiece/DBR of Ohio and I used most of the same processes and procedures that had been proven successful in operating a Residential Design/Build firm. JCDM Home Builders became the only licensed architectural firm that was also a residential contractor within an eighty mile radius of Joplin Missouri. JCDM Home Builders focus was to design and build custom homes in all price ranges while also providing residential remodeling and insurance restoration services to the four state area of Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas. We were highly successful in helping the Joplin tornado victims rebuild. About a year later, the division's focus had moved into the upscale residential market, building mostly executive level homes. In late December of 2013, after many weeks of discussions, JCDM Home Builders spun off from Joplin Construction and reemerged as Masterpiece-DBR.
  • Masterpiece/Dbr Of Ohio
    Founder
    Masterpiece/Dbr Of Ohio Aug 2009 - Dec 2011
    Columbus, Ohio Area
A residential design build firm specializing in upscale residential remodeling projects and the construction of executive level custom homes. This company was basically a "reactivation" of Masterpiece Builders when I decided to go into business again in late 2009. In late May of 2011, a devastating tornado hit my home town of Joplin Missouri. I initial came to Joplin to verify that my family was safe and sound but later decided to stay to assist with the rebuilding efforts. I sold off all of my company assets to two of my former employees who now operate the company in the Central Ohio area..
  • Thompson/Dbr
    General Manager
    Thompson/Dbr Apr 2007 - Aug 2009
    Columbus, Ohio Area
Thompson Building Associates is a reconstruction and restoration firm working on commercial & residential projects damaged by fire, water, mold and Mother Nature. Thompson Building Associates had three "sister companies" – Emergency Board up, Structural Repair, Mold Abatement, and Cleaning/Storage.I was hired to create a new "sister company" with the projects that were brought with me from C.V. Perry & Companies. One of my other duties was to work very closely with the other “sister companies” owned by Thompson Building Associates. Oversaw all of the operations for a Design/Build firm involved in residential remodeling and custom new home construction. Directly supervise the various department heads for the Design department, Estimating and Purchasing department, Sales and Marketing department and the Production department. Highlights:1. Initially started as a “one man operation” with $1.1M in first year sales. Second year gross sales was 1.9M, followed by 3.4M in sales for the third year in operations.2. Using all of my past experiences, I set up all of the written protocols and various documents for use in any phase of work involving design, estimating, sales, purchasing, production and warranty.3. Developed a detailed marketing program with a lead tracking program.4. Instituted the delivery of a monthly email newsletter to potential, current and former clients. 5. Developed a website for use by potential customers, existing clients, vendors, trade professionals and suppliers. I left for two reasons, (1) the local economy in late 2009 was suffering a serious downturn and it was getting increasing difficult to maintain a 45% GP as the company required and (2) I felt I could do more with less overhead if I reopened my former business. I left on good terms & received an excellent reference letter from the owner of the company.
  • United States Army Reserve
B Team Xo, Company Commander, Detachment Commander, Staff Officer
United States Army Reserve Jun 1991 - Nov 2007
Transferred from the Active Army to accept a position with the 11th Special Forces Group, US Army Reserves. Served in various leadership and command staff positions - all in various areas of Special Operations Command (Army Reserves) including the Special Forces, PsyOps and finally in SOCOM. While in the Army Reserves, I was activated on seven different occasions
  • C. V. Perry & Companies
    Operations Manager
    C. V. Perry & Companies Feb 2006 - Mar 2007
    Columbus, Ohio Area
Oversaw the day to day operations for the residential remodeling division engaged in upscale projects. Directly supervise the various employees in the Estimating, Purchasing, Sales and Production departments.Highlights:1. Took over the remodeling division of C.V. Perry & Companies that was in total disarray. Upon my first day, I discovered that the remodeling division had over 28 jobs in “progress” with over half of the projects having been at a total stand still for over 45 days. Completed all started projects with in 90 days.2. The founder of the parent company, C.V. Perry and his son, Carlyle Perry Jr., were both deceased just prior to my arrival. The parent company, C.V. Perry & Companies, was placed into a trust with the understanding that the employees would purchase the company thru an ESOP. About a year after my hire date, the senior trustee decided that the company should go back to its “original core roots”. The decision was made to shut down all the other divisions, (condo, land development, rental property, remodeling), and keep open only the custom home building division, C.V. Perry Builders. The division, C..V. Perry Builders, had not made a profit in the past seven years and the remodeling and the rental divisions were the only divisions of the company that had consistently made a net profit.3. I negotiated with the transfer of all viable remodeling contracts that had been previously signed to THOMPSON/DBR which totaled almost 800K in gross sales. 4. Purchased from the company: a show booth that I had designed, over 2 dozen yard signs, various construction tools, and construction software at a “fire sale” price for use by THOMPSON/DBR.5. With the closing of the only two profit generating divisions, ( C.V. Perry Remodeling ), and the rental property division, ( Perry Property Management ), the remaining open division, C.V. Perry Builders, was eventually shut down and went into receivership in 2009 owing over 17M to various parties.

  • Matrka
Operations Manager & Construction Services Manager
    Matrka May 2003 - Feb 2006
    Columbus, Ohio Area
continued from aboveHighlights: 1. Eliminated an existing “guess-timating” system. Created a new custom unit cost database for upscale custom remodeling with over 5,000 task items. Decreased turn around time for an estimate from several weeks to 8 hours. Budget vs. Actual Cost Variances went from 11% to 2%.2. Removed the company wide “scrappy” mentality (“speedy crap”). I developed and implemented my own program of the 5C’s to be used by all departments that required all work and documentation to be Complete, Correct, Consistent, Clear, and Concise before being passed on to another department and/or being accepted by any department. One of the results, in unison with efforts of other team members, was an increase from 2.3M to 5.8M in sales in a two year period.3. Totally reworked the design/estimating/sales/purchasing process and created, from scratch, a new structure which included a reworked contract document, a new specifications document, a new selection planner, a new detailed project schedule, revised vendor walk-thru procedures, price requests, pre-build forms, and other forms used in the vendor selection and ordering process.4. Developed a custom purchase order system which auto shifted to the specific vendor’s price book and that is directly linked to the estimating cost database, the actual job budget and to the specific job schedule. Average job gross profit margins increased from average of 22% to 31%.5. Created a custom, highly detailed Microsoft Project schedule template for use on all jobs. This resulted in an average 12% decrease in the actual time needed to produce work in the field. 6. Designed, supervised & sold two spec homes for myself while also working a 50 hour work week. 7. The first project that exclusively used all the new systems, a $680,000 job, was produced on schedule and at a 40.8% gross profit. An all time, job gross profit record for the company.I resigned after recruited by CFO of C.V. Perry and Companies
  • Schmid & Mccathern Builders
    Construction Services Manager
    Schmid & Mccathern Builders Dec 1999 - May 2003
    Delaware Ohio
Supervised two full time CADD operators and a full time estimator while also preparing all initial designs, reviewed revised plans for design correctness, checked construction documents for code compliance, issued final estimates, prepared final specifications and job budgets, tracked progress of all jobs, issued purchase orders, recruited and negotiated with all vendors, maintained salesmen price books and master cost database, assisted sales staff and job superintendents as needed.Highlights: 1. Modified a cost database that I had previously developed to cover several types of custom homes with over 9,000 items. Decreased turn around time for an estimate from several days to 6 hours. 2. Developed a computerized job progress tracking system tied to a timely issuance of purchase orders while also linking with QuickBooks Pro for instant variance reporting and cost analysis.3. Created a sale processing and pre-build structure which includes contract documents, color selection forms, pre-build forms, and other forms used in the contract and ordering process.4. Customized a computer aided drafting and design program with an estimating system so that all designs would have two independent estimating takeoffs for double redundancy.5. Maintained all computer hardware and software needs for the company and two branch offices. 6. In the final 14 months did not have any job's actual construction costs exceed budget by 2.8%.7. Developed a networked computer color selection system with off site internet availability so that clients could update their own selections prior to the cut off time for ordering.I accepted an unsolicited offer from MATRKA & i wanted to expand my responsibilities.
  • Design*Tech & Masterpiece Builders
    Owner - Partner
    Design*Tech & Masterpiece Builders Oct 1993 - Nov 1999
Design*Tech was a residential design firm that grew from side projects that I did for various homeowners and contractors in the evenings and on weekends while still working full time at Cardinal Builders and later Dave Fox Contacting. While operating Design*Tech, I started with two other partners an additional company a few months later called Masterpiece Builders. Masterpiece Builders was a residential construction firm using state of the art construction materials and techniques such as Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) and Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs). In the Summer of 1999, I was approached by Keith Schmid & Steven McCathern to join their young upstart company. They had many exciting ideas and the opportunity to work for a new company as they began to grow substantially was exciting to me. In November 1999, I purchased from my two partners, their interest in Masterpiece Builders and then "Mothballed" the company. I did a few projects "on the side" while working full time for other firms. Over the years I have kept up my various local contractor licenses & bonds valid with the intention if I ever need to reopening the company in the future, I could.
