About Doug Macleod P.Eng.

Doug is a Chemical Engineer from McMaster University, Operations Management Diploma Western Business School, U of Western Ontario with over 30 years of Hydrogen centric experience. Throughout his career, he has operated, designed and project managed H2 production and consumption facilities for three of the largest integrated Canadian oil companies, Syncrude, Canadian Natural and Sturgeon Refinery. Doug has wide breadth and expert knowledge of all aspects of Steam Methane Reforming blue H2 facilities including development and execution, operations, production, and consumption. His entire career has been H2 centric; from operating multiple H2 production technologies for SCL, to establishing the design basis and configuration for new and existing facility expansions currently in operation at SCL; CN’s Horizon facilities with accountability for H2, Hydrotreating and more. Responsibilities included facility configurations for all phases of the projects, technology and licensor selections, license and contract negotiations; Major project award winning results, with in-command execution leadership and supervision. Expertise includes H2 manufacturing through SMR and heavy oil Gasification. H2 purification through cryogenic and hot CO2 removal processes, PSA and membrane technologies, hydrogen compression from low pressure applications, integral & screw compressor, multi-stage reciprocating compressors and high-pressure centrifugal compressors. Doug has led major projects through all stages of development from conceptual including extensive pilot plant testing and scaling, FEED, Detailed Engineering, Construction, Commissioning, Startup, Performance Testing through to steady state operations. Doug also has a deep understanding of refinery and upgrading technologies. He has led both operations and projects in the following refining technologies: hydroprocessing, hydrocracking, aromatic saturation, refinery gas processing, sulphur processing and sour water treating. His major passions are to produce facilities from a blank sheet of paper that work in concert with stakeholder and Joint Venture Partners’ needs, as well as meet Owners’ business expectations; tightly controlled to exceed expectations on Capital Costs and highly effective operations. Has led major coalitions and Joint Ventures from participant leadership, alignment, and competitiveness perspective (Best performance results in Energy).
