Introduction:My name is Douglas Knight, and I am an experienced R&D chemist who has specialized in new material synthesis and characterization. As my Linked in profile and attached resume indicates, I obtained my Ph.D. in Chemistry in December of 2005 at the University of Missouri-Columbia in Columbia Missouri. My dissertation, “Anion and Solvent Influences on the Self-Assembly of Copper(I) Coordination Solids” was based on the synthesis and characterization of several 2- and 3-dimensional metal-organic porous solids. By selecting the proper anion, organic ligand, and/or crystallization solvent, these materials were designed to absorb gasses or foreign anion species. My dissertation advisor at the University of Missouri-Columbia was Professor Steven W. Keller. Following my graduation, I was involved in several years of R&D synthesis and characterization of a variety of functional materials for use in hydrogen storage. The goal was to develop materials that can desorb and absorb hydrogen at a prolific level. The unique synthesis and characterization of these ‘reversible’ hydrogen storage materials led to a variety of publications, patents, and professional presentations. The later part of my studies focused on the design and implementation of compacted hydrogen generators that were geared for the average consumer. My contribution, as the in-house chemist, included experimentation on the various additives and consistency of the materials in order to induce the optimal release of hydrogen for each apparatus. I found this stage of my studies quite an invigorating twist to my already complex research agenda.
