I am currently focused on building a more effective pathway for candidates working towards their Fellowships in the Society of Actuaries. I connect stakeholders, ideas, and resources, and focus on the candidate experience.

I started The Goaltender Home Page in the spring of 1994, and it is the longest continually-active hockey website on the internet. The goal of the site is to gather all historical information on hockey netminders, including statistics, game logs, transactions, injuries, and trivia. I spend a lot of time researching through old newspaper archives, and the site contains several pieces of information that are only available on the webpage (including game-by-game logs, and custom metrics on goal support, strength of schedule, game-to-game variability, and performance relative to league norms).

I loved my (near) twenty years at Milliman, tackling complex health problems, finding strategically sound solutions, and building genuine deep connections and becoming a trusted partner to my clients. I specialized in assisting commercial and managed Medicaid health plans with strategy and tactics, including contract negotiations, benchmarking, reimbursement, and plan pricing. My expertise also extended to predictive modeling, risk adjustment, reserving, product strategy, and tactics related to TRICARE, USFHP, and VA programs. Throughout my career, I have been deeply involved in health research, including the formative years of the Affordable Care Act and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the emeritus chair of the Society of Actuaries’ health section, I get the chance to stay at the forefront of the dynamic health risk industry, and I’m always seeking innovative approaches to help my clients. In my toolbox, I wield a diverse array of actuarial and mathematical techniques, ranging from GLM and CHAID modeling to complexity science approaches like genetic algorithms and agent-based models. What sets me apart is my dedication to tailoring each approach to the unique nuances of the problem at hand, eschewing one-size-fits-all solutions. Although devising the right approach is essential, the most rewarding aspect of my work lies in effectively communicating key findings and conclusions to stakeholders. Making complex concepts accessible and insightful is where I truly thrive. I love to collaborate on projects that delve into cutting-edge actuarial techniques. I was given the opportunity to teach exciting courses for some highly motivated students. Westminster has a great campus environment, and I loved the feel of Salt Lake City.In fall 2003, I taught Calculus 3 and two sections of Intro to Statistics. In spring 2004, I taught Numerical Analysis and two sections of Intro to Statistics.

I taught QRMS, Calculus 3, Applied Calculus, and Trigonometry, and also worked in the Math Modules (assistant director). I specialized in QRMS (Quantitative Reasoning and Mathematical Skills) - I think that I ended up teaching nine or ten sections of this - because I really enjoyed trying to get non-majors interested in the beauty of mathematics. Although it's supposed to be a terminating course for non-majors, I know of (at least) six individuals who earned math degrees (with three in graduate school) after my class. Very proud of my students!While in Boulder, I also was an assistant coach for the university's women's hockey team (1998-2003, ACHA Division 1) and the men's hockey team (2002-03, ACHA Division 3). I also played for the men's (ACHA Division 2) team, almost exclusively as a backup goaltender.

I worked in the Research Applications Program (RAP) group, primarily working on weather forecasting (wind shear) and LIDAR applications. Most of our work was done either in C++ or in Matlab, although I did spend several months converting a large software platform from FORTRAN to Matlab (as fun as it sounds). The RAP group is an interesting place to work for anyone who wants to apply their mathematical knowledge to difficult problems, and was great practice for my later career as an actuary. Plus, I got to launch weather balloons from time to time.
