About Douglas Owens-Pike
After working with Metro Blooms this past growing season, I enjoyed working with young people, training them with the nuance of how to care for raingardens designed with tremendous native diversity.I'm thrilled the landscape industry has adopted more sustainable practices, including greater use of native plant diversity and recognition of the values of that diversity. Habitat for endangered pollinators is an important one.In 1989, I founded EnergyScapes to plan, transform and nurture more healthy, beautiful landscapes. We made a decision to close the company in 2016 due to the changing economy. Since 2019, I have begun a new venture growing trees best adapted to the coming climate disruption. Stay tuned for a species list and availability. These landscapes save energy at all phases: during construction we relied on more human power, we purchased local materials to reduce transport, we designed plantings that continue to reduce summer cooling and winter heating bills, as well as self-sustaining communities of native diversity that take less fuel to maintain. No mowing, blowing, fertilizer or pesticides required.I continue to write articles and give presentations on sustainable landscaping and how to apply these principles in residential to commercial settings including alternative, low-input lawns. Let me know if you would like to schedule my presentation, "The Lawn of the Future", for your group.Specialties: teaching how to plan, transform and nurture landscapes that heal us as they calm us with their beauty, with raingardens, permeable driving surfaces, and adding more habitat for threatened pollinators.Planning diversity and resilience for our changing climate.Teaching the wider goals of incorporating sustainability into our lifestyle, including our spirituality.
Listed skills include Sustainability, Landscape Design, Construction, Plant, and 45 others.

CurrentRecent review of "Beautifully Sustainable"“I learned so much from this book about making a garden beautiful AND sustainable AND less labor-intensive through using fewer harmful products, using native plants, and directing and conserving rainwater runoff. The principles in this book work on a small city lot or a more spacious suburban lot. The author's approach is fun and encouraging. Makes you feel like you can really accomplish your landscaping goals -- and help the planet in the process.”

Chief Ecological Officer
I founded EnergyScapes with the goal of creating beautiful landscapes that benefit people as well as our environment. We design, build and maintain sustainable landscapes focused on locally native plant communities best suited for each site. We work to ensure best winter solar gain, while keeping summer cooling costs to a minimum with proper placement of trees, shrubs and vines. We recently received approval for our trademark from the US Patent Office for our "Green Awnings" that keep south windows cooler in summer, using the cooling power of vines, yet maximizing winter solar gain.
