When America's Leading Edge Systems closed down, I decided to form my own company, basically doing the same stuff I was doing before.I do special projects, primarily involving bar coding, weighing, software, and system integration. I also do field service on bar code printers, labeling systems, and related equipment.

Custom Machinery Designed and documented all aspects of the systems, including mechanical components, electrical integration (PLC control systems, custom electronics, printers, host data and control), pneumatics, and software. Specified and purchased all parts. Built, programmed, tested, delivered and installed the systems. Developed manuals and training materials in both printed and electronic forms. Consulted with customers on integration requirements and assisted with implementation. Trained customer personnel in proper system use and maintenance. Provided field service and support. Pallet load print/apply labeling system, capable of labeling two adjacent sides of a load. System to close and label cartons of cylinder head bolt sets. Weighing and barcode label printing system for use in food plants. Machine to transport and rotate a tube containing solder paste back and forth under an industrial inkjet printer head.Major Software Projects Finished an uncompleted PC-based wastewater plant monitoring and control system that had been abandoned by another vendor. Ported an existing DOS-based automatic weighing and labeling system to Windows. Designed, developed and implemented a scale server program to host a product database for a parts counting and labeling application.General Performed installations, training, field service, and telephone support for purchased equipment. Developed procedures and training materials to support these efforts. Subcontracted for a nationwide service company to service barcode printers. Developed marketing materials, graphics, price lists, and value-added CDs for product offerings. Provided technical assistance with sales efforts, including requirements analysis, specification writing, and quoting. Developed relationships with resellers for various OEM product lines. Trained and supervised two additional technical support people.

Coordinated and assisted installation of 90+ pallet load labelers at five regional plants as part of a corporate-wide Warehouse Management System implementation for a national brewing company. Worked with technical support staff to install many other multi-system, multi-plant projects for label applicators, printer/applicators, and associated product handling systems. Assisted customers with integration of mechanical components, control signals and data communications. Coordinated and performed installation, service, customer training, and support for all other labeling, printing, and product handling equipment, as well as software sold by the division. Developed training materials, additional technical documentation, technical bulletins, and procedures for common tasks. Designed and built custom electronics as required to implement special customer requirements beyond the original capabilities of the purchased equipment. Modified existing systems in certain cases where results could not be obtained by adding additional circuitry. Developed custom software applications on various platforms to integrate with machinery sold by the division. Performed ongoing software maintenance. Took over maintenance of a DOS-based automatic weighing and labeling system originally written by customer staff (that later left the customer's company). Assisted sales staff with requirements analysis, quoting, and communication with the manufacturer regarding operational and technical specifications. Worked with equipment manufacturers to improve machinery designs. Trained and supervised two additional technical support people.

Gradually took over all field service functions of the division, freeing up other sales staff to concentrate on developing new business. Turned the service aspect of the division into an income generator, as it had previously been offered primarily as a courtesy. Sold, installed, and serviced pressure-sensitive apply-only and print & apply labeling systems distributed by the division. Performed on-site equipment demonstrations as part of the sales effort. Developed parts price lists and other related documentation for customers to make it easier for them to purchase the correct parts. Developed customer and job tracking systems (using dBase IV) for internal use in the division. Implemented to improve customer service and efficiency.
