For most of my career, I worked in different capacities, including multiple leadership roles, with the West Des Moines Fire Department, where the teams live, eat, and work together on a daily basis. Teams become more like family with the complex dynamics of differing personalities. Leading this type of team is very much about coaching and mentoring individuals—but it’s also about leading the team in finding cohesiveness, common ground, and respect for each other, even amidst frustrating or difficult situations, so they can operate as a unit. Team leadership within this unique dynamic helped me become a more effective, intuitive, and empathic coach.In 2013, I ran across a coaching certification program being offered in Des Moines. Always looking for ways to enhance my leadership and coaching skills, I jumped on the opportunity to explore them. During my initial training, I discovered a true passion for coaching, supporting my strong desire to help people. In 2016, I earned an additional certification with the John Maxwell Team. I began coaching clients part-time while still employed. After retirement in 2020, I sought a training program to become certified through the International Coaching Federation (ICF) to prepare me for my own full-time coaching practice.What I love about coaching is the ability to connect with people on a deeper level. I have an innate talent for motivating people, helping them discover the path forward, and building their confidence. I work with them to remove the fear and insecurity that holds them back.
