I worked under the mentorship of Don Harbert, Don Harbert Enterprises, Wadsworth, Ohio, learning how to build a solo business of “helping other people reach their goals.” Coaching executives was the natural outcome of all my life’s experiences. I continued to coach several of my ECS clients during my L-3 Avionics years. After retiring from L-3 Avionics and taking a year off to ponder my future, I began this coaching journey again. My son convinced me to re-brand as “Doug”, saying, “The name is a statement of authenticity, simplicity and integrity. It does not try to be anything more than it is, as it is grounded in reality”. . . . what a great son.

Among my clients were three L-3 Corporation division Presidents - two in California and one in Michigan. A need arose in 2004 for a VP Finance in the Michigan division. I was offered and accepted the job because of the challenge, the opportunity to continue my coaching within a large company, and the high degree of teamwork and integrity of the division executive staff. My commitment was to stay five years and help build the finance team. I stayed ten years and retired in 2014. It was here I developed and implemented a program for high achieving employees. Borrowed from the book by Charles Coonradt, 1984, I called the program "The Game of Work - An Adventure in Personal Leadership" - achieving great success in the lives of many employees across the leadership and discipline spectrums. Since retiring, my coaching continues with my company, simply named “Doug”. -

Although very appreciative of the experience and opportunities I was given at Lockheed Martin, my professional leanings were taking shape in the area of coaching executives, which I seemed to do with more frequency while attending to my financial management responsibilities. The contrast in the mission, vision and management styles (Loral vs. LMCO) convinced me to leave and build a personal and professional management development business. The coaching industry was in its infancy. -

Working under the influence of the senior management of this corporation taught me how to think like an entrepreneur, valuing the challenge and reward of taking intelligent risks. Progressing to VP Finance, I learned the reason why "C" level thinking is, and must be, different. "Think like the President, Act like the CFO” became my mantra; a lesson I pass on to my clients. It is at Loral Corp where my developing talent in coaching took root and increased exponentially.
