From my first drafting class in high school, I found something I enjoyed doing, and from that time it has been a diverse technical ramble. Reasons for career transitions vary, but each provided a better foundation and a wider perspective, not only of technical aspects but of people with whom I worked. Never planning to attend college, I worked three years as a draftsman, providing time to learn and grow up. I returned to school. At college, I acquired an interest in manufacturing. The degree led me to ten years in smelting and refining, glass liquor bottle manufacturing, and aircraft parts acquisition. Roles varied and spanned multiple jobs. Quality control, safety, project development, project management, supervision, plant engineering, and technical support. The manufacturing environment was unstable but did teach me that change is constant and that stress is managed. I decided to transition from a manufacturing engineer to a civil engineer and earn a P.E.Since that time Civil Engineering has been my focus, except for a brief time in which I followed a dream as a real estate mogul. For thirteen years my concentration was transportation design for local and federal roadway and traffic projects. I spent a year working with a traffic engineer who provided valuable insight into the data used for transportation systems development. Again an opportunity arose to expand my knowledge base, and I transitioned into the interesting field of general aviation. Now I spend my time focusing on the design of both roadways and general aviation airports.It's not often I use drafting tools, but the ones I now use provide a few more options than the parallel bar and pencil. Though those are still pretty handy.
