During six years I earned two promotions, while company sales rose from $49 million in 1990 to $110 million in 1996. As the world’s largest producer of ironing boards and other laundry products, our market share grew to 70% through aggressive selling programs, new product development and the acquisition of our largest competitor, Magla. The company’s strategic focus evolved to profitable controlled growth, intended to increase margins.During the last fiscal year, we increased operating profit of the company’s largest account (Kmart) from 11.5% to 17.8% (an increase of $1.5MM) This was achieved through mix management, better negotiating of advertising/promotional allowances, the successful implementation of a new marketing concept and new product placements. As category manager for laundry, we developed a new line of accessory items to replace the previous vendor and launched a new packaging program to create differentiation from the competition. I managed 35% of the company’s annual dollar volume, including four of the top ten accounts (K-mart, Target, Sears & AAFES). Additional duties included special market penetration along with the liquidation of obsolete and excess inventory.During 1994 I was asked to direct the sales refocusing effort of our juvenile gate product line. Margins were declining and volume was flat. We established new distribution and pricing parameters. In conjunction with the product manager, we co-developed sales presentations supported with industry and product data achieving a 12% sales increase, along with a significant improvement in margins.
