My experience goes back to 1976 when I was a junior in high school I work for 2 years in the Mayor Dailey youth summer program tutoring summer school students. For 18 years I work at Allendale Residential Facility in Lake Villa Illinois. I work with Regular Ed and Special Needs students with ADHD, BD, MR and ED until August 1998 when I was hired by ECHO as the Dean of Students to work in the PACE Alternative Program where I work for 14 years. What I have learned is that our youth boys and girls need someone in some place that they can go, talk and feel safe when they are sharing their feelings and emotions. Our students need to develop Team Building Skills so that they can learn to work as a team not as one person. Our students need to know that they are not alone and that it is okay for them to ask for help, seek out support, and be given advice when they need it. This is just one way of stimulating positive self-esteem in our youth. These youth need to engage in topics that involves Critical Thinking on topics that are relevant in their lives and is educational based. Some topic examples: are Assertiveness, Bad Mood, Bullying, Being Afraid, Confident, Coping with Cliques, Developing Self Esteem, How to Improve or Develop Self Esteem Rejection, and What it means to be a friend.As a life long Educator it is not hard to understand why our students don'ttrust. The goal is to help them develop the trust they will need to be successful when confronted with their fears and needs. They will need to know who, how and where to find the support that they will need in order to overcome their fears and learn to trust
