Red Bull to Buddha is a book about finding balance between disruptive innovation and traditional conceptions of community and wisdom. It draws upon my Ph.D. research at Princeton in the Department of Religion, 10 years of leadership experience in innovation, social media, and technology startups; and 20 years of meditation practice.Red Bull to Buddha originally began as a 500+ page book that included a section that looked at the history of civilization through the lens of innovation, as well as a general theory of how innovation is the mechanism for the evolution of business, society and culture. Analyzed behavioral shifts during the jazz age, the birth of rock and roll and beatniks in the 1950s, “The Sixties” counterculture movement, disco, funk and early hip-hop in the 1970s, punk rock and new wave in the 1980s, and the recent birth of electronic music. Contrasted these taste-defining movements in relation to new technologies and creation of niche markets for music, clothing, and lifestyle apparel. Examined pervasive influence on race, ethnicity, class, and normality.Graduate work in religion – in many ways the oldest form of branding on the planet – refined the intangible skill sets required to execute any successful marketing campaign: ability to track and spot emerging trends, qualitative and quantitative research skills; insight to transform desires into perceived needs through creative branding, events, and company messaging; clear and concise writing; ability to identify key influencers in target demographics and creatively incentivize them to become brand advocates.
