Post-doctoral Researcher working in the Ecosystems Approach to Fisheries Management Team to solve problems relating to designing, progressing and implementing methods of fisheries and ecosystem management, known as the ‘Real-Time Incentive’ (RTI) approach, as an alternative to the current quota and effort management systems. Specifically this involves data provisioning, Management Strategy Evaluation, stakeholder engagement and co-design.I also work on integrated ecosystem assessments (IEA) examining links between sectors, pressures, ecological characteristics and assessing risk using semi-quantitative frameworks to inform the ecosystem approach to fisheries management. I further develop these tools in the context of socio-ecological systems and in light of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. I am actively involved in ICES, as a Chair of the IEA Steering Group, Co-Chair of WGEAWESS (Working Group on Ecosystem Assessment of the Western European Shelf Seas), and a member of WGSOCIAL (Working Group on Social Indicators), WGBESEO (Working Group on Balancing Ecological, Social and Economic Objectives), and WGMARS (Working Group on Maritime Systems. I am involved in further developing the ICES Ecosystem Overviews, and have taken part in workshops such as WKEO3, WKCONSERVE and the co-chaired the recent WKTRANSPARENT. I am also a member of WKIrish, which has worked to progress ecosystem-based management (EBFM) of the Irish Sea.

I was the co-chair of the ICES Working Group on Ecosystem Assessment of the Western European Shelf Seas (https://www.ices.dk/community/groups/Pages/WGEAWESS.aspx) where I am leading the updating and review of the Celtic Seas Ecosystem Overview. WGEAWESS focuses on using integrated ecosystem assessments (IEAs) to inform the ecosystem approach to marine management of the Atlantic European continental shelf. WGEAWESS produces high-quality science that underpins holistic, adaptive, evidence-based management. As a group we have a particular interest in risk assessment, integrated trend analysis, multiple modelling approaches (foodweb, fisheries and spatial), and collaborating with other ICES groups to evolve and update the Ecosystem Overviews and move towards implementing IEAs as a tool for marine management. In this regard, we are exploring ways to effectively incorporate the socio-economic and climate change side of our ecosystems into management.

Whilst employed as a Project Officer with AquaTT, I utilised my unique combination of scientific research, project management, administrative and customer service skills developed throughout my career to meet challenges relating to scientific dissemination, knowledge transfer, and training. The role involved developing, reviewing and proofing applications for a range of H2020 programs, whilst working with large numbers of collaborators, along with the production of training and support documents.AquaTT partners with the scientific research community to deliver results, achieve positive impact, and demonstrate the value of publicly-funded research. AquaTT works with Europe’s top researchers for the entirety of each project’s life cycle, from project conception right through to delivery, developing and implementing knowledge transfer protocols.

The Marine Institute is the State agency responsible for marine research, technology development and innovation in Ireland. They provide scientific and technical advice to Government to help inform policy and to support the sustainable development of Ireland’s marine resource.My role within the Fisheries Ecosystem Advisory Services team primarily related to the development of the Ecosystem approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) as a management tool for the Celtic Seas, through the implementation and further development of a risk/pressure assessment framework. My research involves the production, management and analysis of a large dataset of complex interactions between sectors and their pressures and impacts upon ecological characteristics, in order to support the EAFM, and the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).Another aspect of my work was related to various aspects of the MSFD and Irelands monitoring commitments and efforts to date - how these will enable us to meet our legislative responsibilities and where improvements and increases in efficiencies can be made.During this time I also took part in the Irish GroundFish Survey, organised two expert panel assessment workshops, took part in two ICES working groups, contributed to the Marine Atlas of North Western Waters and co-authored papers on benthic monitoring and marine litter.Skills: Project Support, Desktop Research, Office Administration, Workshop Organisation and Hosting, Time Management, Effective Communication, Presentation Skills, Dissemination, Risk Evaluation, Report and Paper Writing.

Whilst at Bournemouth University on a short post-doc, I investigated patterns of genetic diversity (mtDNA) of a range of small mammals in Europe in order to investigate hypotheses relating to historical post-glacial colonisation patterns. Whilst employed as a postgraduate researcher working towards my PhD at University College Dublin, School of Biology and Environmental Science, I investigated the life history, genetic variation, population ecology, dietary variation and trophic status of the freshwater fish pike (Esox lucius) around Irelands lakes, rivers and canals. During this time I was primarily responsible for the research and management of my Ph.D. research project, including budget management, stakeholder outreach and engagement, along with mastering multiple disciplines and managingcross-collaboration. My research is enabled me to develop skills in microsatellite genetic analysis, stable isotope analysis, stomach content analysis, morphometrics, ageing techniques and statistical methods such as; numerical ecology (ANOVA, Linear regression, multivariate, univariate, non-parametric tests), SPSS, PRIMER (e.g. PERMANOVA & ANOSIM) and R (e.g. SIAR, SIBER, mixSIAR), genetic statistical packages, (e.g. Genemapper, Arlequin, STRUCTURE, DIYABC, MEGA, DNAsp), and morphometric packages (e.g. TPS, MorphoJ).The role also involved teaching, mentoring and training undergraduate students, including co-supervising three undergraduate research projects. I demonstrated scientific methods and techniques whilst teaching in undergraduate labs and ran tutorials. Whilst with the Marine Institute I was the administrative support and a desk researcher for the Institute's International Cooperation Programme Manager. This role provided me with an insight into marine science policy and strategy, and E.U. funding schemes. I was involved in issues related to the national Marine Research, Knowledge and Innovation Strategy (Sea Change, 2007-2013) and international research funding (EU FP7, INTERREG), and in organising an international workshop (New Developments in Marine Sensor Technologies Opportunities and Challenges, DCU 26th March 2009), and the preparation of published guides to FP7 and INTERREG–IV marine funding in Ireland and an in-house booklet on marine mammal research in Ireland.
