I lead the Planning and Sustainable Communities (PSC) team which provide public planning, community design, and policy analysis services to communities throughout the Southeast. The PSC team manages EarthCraft Communities, a regional sustainable development certification. I lead program development and project management which involves coordinating all aspects of the certification process for dozens of projects. Sustainability Coordinator

Cimarron, New Mexico, Us

Philmont Scout Ranch is affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America, a conservation minded organization. Each summer thousands of scouts anticipate a trip to the Ranch to participate in the BSA’s pinnacle High Adventure Program. While I was employed at the Ranch, over 23,000 participants attended which required 1,000+ staff members facilitating program and managing ranch operations. During the summer Philmont has a daily population greater than 5,000. As the Sustainability Coordinator I was charged with moving this city sized business towards more sustainable operating procedures. My main target was the reduction of landfill waste with special interest in institutionalizing procedures. In addition to waste issues, my staff and I made proposals for a Sustainability Oversight Committee and the adoption of a written commitment acknowledging the reality of climate change and the necessity to take action to reduce our emissions. While managing the recycling program I authored a comprehensive and intuitive training manual. This first ever manual insures continuity from summer to summer. It was field tested and verified. In addition, a thorough data collection process was implemented and an interdepartmental training manual was produced. This manual insures the continuity from summer to summer.

May 2012 - Aug 2012

Teaching Assistant

Decorah, Ia, Us

I helped facilitate the Laboratory Section of Environmental Geology with Professors Laura Peterson and Sean Bryan. The Environmental Geology course at Luther College is designed to introduce basic geology principles with 'authentic' learning experiences. Authentic learning experiences were created both in the lecture hall and with my help in the Laboratory. I helped review lab procedure, offering a student's perspective, and then facilitated learning during lab times. I assisted in water quality testing, stratigraphy, river dynamics, and carbon cycle and climate change lab topics.

Feb 2012 - May 2012

Program Counselor

Cimarron, New Mexico, Us

At Philmont Scout Ranch I worked as an interpretive camp counselor for the summers of 2010 and 2012. I resided at a living history camp, portraying the year 1912 to campers. Staff duties at the camp are diverse in their character as well as their needed skill sets. The duties can be divided into two categories: 1912 homesteading duties and modern health and safety duties. While protraying a 1912 homesteader I was versed in local history and skills such as, animal husbandry, farming, adobe construction, and knitting. On the modern health and safety side of things I responded to emergency radio calls to treat injured participants. The camp had it's own water treatment facility and we maintained records on water safety. Along with safe water we were a New Mexico Restaurant License and were required to go through an annual food and safety inspection. In my first summer at the homesteading camp I identified many additional facility maintenance and betterment projects. Due to time restraints imposed by regular staff duties I was unable to finish these projects. I was unable to finish all of my projects. I made sure to return to this camp in order to complete these projects. I wrote a plan and proposed it to the Associate Director of Program and I was rehired to the same camp in back to back years, a rare happening. In the second year I finished designing and constructing a ramada over our courtyard, renovated the horno, and further cleaned the premises. In fact, the next year's staff complained to me that they didn't have any "Legacy Projects" (an award granted by the Ranch's Maintenance Department for projects completed that better the property) to complete due to my initiative.
