Program-managed several Microsoft's internal cloud adoption projects and worked closely with the Microsoft Azure team to design, document and promote agile processes and procedures intended as proven successful patterns customers can follow when managing large-scale risk-management and standards compliance (ISO 27001, HIPAA, ITAR/FISMA, PCI-DSS, etc.) projects. Authored for Microsoft, internal and external technical whitepapers addressing key issues that arise in customer security standards compliance assessment projects. Then, applied them in large information security management system (ISMS) projects for Bridge Partners customers.

Employed to sunset three content-rich but aging web sites with a modern, organically engineered, secure and resilient SaaS platform designed to scale rapidly and leverage cloud operational efficiencies. Responsible for architecture, development, release quality and all technical and IT operations including the selection and roll out of agile engineering processes, development tools, custom continuous integration release management tool chain and process, production measurement and monitoring systems, information security and compliance policies and procedures.

The positive results of this exploratory effort decided the adoption of Android as Motorola’s strategic smart phone operating system.Drove technical integration, patent portfolio and road map rationalization efforts of enterprise products during the Symbol acquisition.Delivered advanced enterprise product roadmap shipping four network-converged, very high-availability (99.999) Enterprise-Class CDMA/GSM/Wi-Fi telephony devices and related public safety services.Managed engineering and manufacturing for Motorola’s $50MM retail cordless telephone business, shipping 12 new products in 18 months. Reduced average BOM cost by 18% and improved overall product line margin by 6%.

Two weeks after the acquisition finalized (see Premise Systems below), the CFO of this $250MM public company announced significant reductions in six prior quarters of reported earnings. The resulting fallout left the company without a board chairman and Dan plus two other executives managing operations. What began as position and charter to create a new enterprise solutions division with P&L responsibility, turned into a crisis management engagement and a broadly defined executive role, reporting to the board of directors and eventually to a new CEO. Co-managed the company and assisted in the search for new executives (CEO, CFO, VP Operations, VP Marketing, and VP Sales) within the first 30 days of the crisis. Managed product engineering and intellectual property portfolio consolidation efforts across six product teams and three geographies. Reduced ongoing product engineering and related operational expenses by $21MM (8%).Played a vital role in developing crisis communications and PR strategy and plan. Participated in press and quarterly financial briefings reporting on crisis turnaround progress. Aligned solutions product resources and roadmap with post-crisis business and product strategies. Drove resulting M&A activities selling three previously acquired product companies including Premise Systems to Motorola.

Dan was hired as a Windows SDK/DDK support engineer and advanced quickly into engineering management. He conceived and chartered the first Premier support engineering team, which in turn supported the deeply technical engineering teams at Microsoft’s key ISVs, OEMs and IHVs. Dan’s Premier support model was highly successful and remains a vibrant component of Microsoft’s technical support services today.After several years Dan moved into technical marketing where he conceived, chartered and managed DevCast, the first technical television programming originating from Redmond. Dan was responsible for the development and delivery of thousands of hours of award-winning, high-quality technical training, from the best minds at Microsoft to millions of enterprise software developers worldwide.
