Dr. ALMIRO ANDRADE is a Black Queer Latinx actor, director, playwright, dramaturg, and theatre translator. Both as a practitioner and as an academic researcher/lecturer, their approach sees all stages of theatre-making as acts of translation and their practice champions the production of international pieces in the most diverse settings across the globe since 2000.Current works include the first English translation of Namibia, Não! by Aldri Anunciação adapted for the silver screen with the title Executive Order(Medida Provisória); a gender-bending adaptation of The Blind One and The Mad One by Cláudia Barral produced by [Foreign Affairs] Theatre published by Inti Press in partnership with Out of the Wings Collective; and also recently published three new translations of the Brazilian canonical playwright within Nelson Rodrigues - Selected Plays, by Bloomsbury/Oberon Books.Links:"The Blind One and the Mad One Cláudia Barral Translated by Almiro Andrade| Inti Press" https://www.intipress.com/product-page/the-blind-one-and-the-mad-one-cl%C3%A1udia-barral-translated-by-almiro-andrade"Nelson Rodrigues: Selected Plays: Wedding Dress; Waltz No. 6; All Nudity Will Punished; Forgive Me for Your Betrayal; Family Portraits; Black Angel; Seven Little Kitties (Oberon Modern Playwrights) Nelson Rodrigues: Oberon Books" https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/nelson-rodrigues-selected-plays-9781786827159/

Director & Translator - The Blind One And The Mad One[Foreign Affairs] Nov 2018 - Nov 2021London, United KingdomDirecting the translated adaptation of Claudia Barral's award-wining play O Cego e O Louco, on a gender-bending production which brought [Foreign Affairs] artistic directors Trine Garrett and Camila França back to stage, together, to portray the twisted sisters. We are programming partnerships and further runs from 2019 onwards at the moment. -
Director / TranslatorNamibia, Não! Uk Apr 2016 - Nov 2021Soho Theatre LondonNamibia, Não! is a political satire that explores the plight of two black Brazilians following a sudden government decree that all African descendants are to be repatriated to the land of their ancestors, their reaction and its consequences. This is an award winning piece of contemporary drama that will question our preconceived ideas about post-colonialism and our own sense of belonging somewhere. We want to expose British audiences to the work of contemporary cutting-edge Brazilian playwright Aldri Anunciação, thus strengthening the influence and the collaborations between Brazilian and British theatre. Besides Anunciação, we have on our creative team, mentoring the translation process, Prof. Catherine Boyle, collaborating composer and sound designer, Xavior, and our creative producer and co-founder of StoneCrabs Theatre Company, Franko Figueiredo. Cast includes Femi Oyeniran, renowned for his role of Moony in Kidulthood and Anuvahood and more recently The Intent; and Anyebe Godwin, known for his work on Hamsptead Theatre West End transfer of Four Minutes Twelve Seconds and BBC1 Doctors. Being the director and translator of this project, I will lead the 4 week R&D process, in order to produce an English textplay of Anunciação’s script with a scratch performance taking place at the Soho Theatre upstairs June 29th. I am producing Namibia UK in association with StoneCrabs Theatre Company. We are bringing programmers and artistic directors of London's main theatres to the Soho Theatre this coming June to see the performance in order to secure the second phase of the project: producing a full theatre run for Namibia UK in Spring/Summer 2019.
